Alfa Laval: New Test Facilities, New Technologies

Heat transfer, separation and fluid handling technology specialist, Alfa Laval, has expanded its Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark with a new gas testing facility. Inert Gas Systems Produces Significant Fuel Savings

The Alfa Laval Automatic Fuel Efficiency Module (AFEM) is a new modification for reducing the fuel consumption of Alfa Laval Smit Combustion inert gas systems. It does so by ensuring the inert gas that keeps cargo safe during offloading is only generated in the exact amounts required. In a two-year pilot project, the AFEM allowed Italian shipping company Navigazione Montanari S.p.A. to achieve an average fuel savings of 30 percent. Based in Fano on the Adriatic Sea, Navigazione Montanari owns and manages a fleet of 21 tankers.

Navigazione Montanari signs Transas TRANSERV agreement

Transas Marine and Navigazione Montanari have signed a TRANSERV agreement for 11 vessels. Nine vessels are already equipped with Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 Dual ECDIS and Transas Admiralty Data Service TADS (Official SENC), and sail paperless. 2 more vessels will be fitted with Navi-Sailor ECDIS and TADS in spring 2013. TRANSERV is a Support and Maintenance program from Transas Marine that includes 24/7 service coordination, charts ordering, software updates and preventive maintenance. With TRANSERV, navigation systems onboard of Navigazione Montanari vessels will be always up-to-date, compliant with the latest standards and rules, support changes in chart format and will ensure easy interface to other bridge systems.

Industry Leaders Elected To ABS Membership

Sixty-Nine prominent shipping industry executives have been elected as new members of ABS. In addition, Rear Admiral David L. Brewer III, Commander, Military Sealift Command, U.S. Navy, was appointed as a member. This brings the ABS worldwide membership to 803. The members, each eminent in their maritime field of endeavor, provide broad governance and oversight of ABS. Montanari Extends Bid For Skaugen

Navigazione Montanari will reportedly extend the offer period on its bid to take over Norwegian shipping firm I.M. Skaugen by two weeks.

Navigazione Montanari Orders Two Ships

Italy’s Navigazione Montanari SpA has reportedly ordered a pair of petrochemical carriers from Hyundai for $25 million, for delivery in 2002 and 2003. Montanari also said it will scrap a tanker called Valchiara. Montanari is said to be financing the new ships using a mixture of cash and bank.

Finaval to Double Fleet after IPO

Italian tanker company Finaval SpA reportedly announced the proceeds of its initial public offering will be used to double the capacity of its fleet and to seize any future M&A opportunity. Finaval operates 13 crude oil and product tankers, of which 6.5 are owned, and has six Aframax crude oil tankers on order with Samsung Heavy Industries Co for a total cost of $380m, plus an option for another four. The new Aframax tankers will be delivered by between the first quarter of next year and the fourth quarter of 2010, allowing the group to nearly double its transport capacity to 1 million tonnes from 600,000. Finaval will be offering some 10.4 million shares, all stemming from a capital increase, until Nov.

Aries Maritime Takes Delivery of Products Tankers

Aries Maritime Transport Limited announced that it has taken delivery of the Chinook, a 2001-built 38,700 dwt double-hulled products tanker. The Chinook was acquired from German owners for $32.6 million. The purchase price is inclusive of the ship's existing time charter with Italian stock listed group Navigazione Montanari at the gross rate of $13,100 per day for the remainder of this year and $13,700 per day until expiration of the contract in January 2007. In addition to the Chinook, the Company expects to take delivery of two Panamax newbuildings in December 2005 and March 2006. Following the delivery of these vessels, Aries will operate a fleet of ten double-hulled products tankers with an average age of 6.3 years and total dwt of 575,325.

Maritime Shares Make A Comeback

Share prices in Oslo continued to rise during June and in the first six months of 1999 the Shipping Index rocketed 30.6 percent. The All Share Index is not far behind with an increase of 23.7 percent during the same period. Trading at the Oslo Stock Exchange has never been more active than in 1999 so far with the daily average turnover for the first half of the year at NOK 1,640 million. This is 27.1 percent higher than the average for the whole of 1998. On average 4,775 transactions were carried out each day during June.This is 42 percent higher than the average for last year.The Italian company Navigazione Montanari has offered NOK 60 per share in I.M. Skaugen (SKA), sending the stock up almost 40 percent and to the top of the winner list for June.

Skaugen Seeks Gas Consolidation

I.M. Skaugen is reportedly working on consolidating its position in the gas carrier market after beating off a hostile takeover by Italy's Navigazione Montanari.
