In the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, Congress established a commission to rename several military bases and ships that commemorate members of the Confederacy. One of these is the Naval oceanographic ship USNS Maury (T-AGS 66), named after oceanographer Matthew Fontaine Maury, who resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy to join the Confederacy at the outbreak of the American Civil War. Norwegian technology enterprise Kongsberg Maritime announced that contracts have been signed for the sale of a HUGIN AUV System to the Indian National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), located in Chennai, India.According to a statement from Kongsberg Maritime India, the HUGIN AUV System ordered by NIOT is rated to a depth of 6,000 metres and will be equipped with a Kongsberg HISAS 1032 synthetic aperture sonar and EM2040 multibeam echosounder, designed for hydrographic and seabed classification applications.It will also carry a high-resolution colour still image camera, plus a range of environmental sensors for oceanographic surveys, including a magnetometer.

Intermarine UK struck an agreement with a Chinese manufacturer to make the Port of Portland one of the UK’s centers for scrubber installation.Intermarine President Slawomir Kalicki signed the agreement at Norshipping in Oslo with counterpart DB Wang deputy general manager of the Shandong Pure Ocean Technology based in Renhe Town in the Shandong province. The deal will see Intermarine act as an agent to Shandong and offer to install its scrubber systems to a wide variety of vessels to help them meet tough new environmental regulations.

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract to supply oceanographic winches and Triplex deck handling systems to a new research vessel being built by the Fassmer shipyard in Berne, Germany. The order was booked into Cargotec's second quarter 2017 order intake. MacGregor equipment deliveries are planned for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2019. The new dual-fuel (LNG) 74m vessel, Atair II, is under construction for the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, said it will reorganize its offshore and merchant shipping operations as part of a plan aiming to achieve €13 million in annual cost savings. Under the plan, MacGregor’s Smart Ocean Technology division will be divided into two new divisions: Cargo Handling and Advanced Offshore Solutions. The statutory cooperation negotiations have now been finalized, resulting in restructuring of operations and reducing approximately 170 full-time equivalents globally. The measures affect MacGregor operations in Norway, Germany, China and Singapore. MacGregor employed globally 1,876 persons at the end of September 2017. Restructuring costs are estimated to be approximately €7 million in the final quarter of 2017, with planned savings to be reached in 2018.
