Man Rescued with Pets near Raccoon Island

The Coast Guard rescued a 68-year-old man and his two pets Thursday from a grounded sailboat near Raccoon Island. Coast Guard watch standers were notified Thursday the 36-foot sailboat Scampo with a man, his dog and his cat aboard ran aground. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew launched from Station Hobucken and arrived on scene at 1 p.m. The boat crew rescued the man and his two pets and transported them to Oriental Marina & Inn located in Oriental at 2:30 p.m. There were no injuries reported, and the owner plans to have the sailboat towed.

2 Rescued from Sailboat Near Hobucken, NC

The Coast Guard rescued two people on Wednesday from the Neuse River near Hobucken. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a mayday call on VHF-FM Channel 16 at 6:39 p.m. from a man and woman aboard the 23-foot sailboat, Sentimental Journey, reporting they were caught in inclement weather. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Hobucken responded, arrived on scene and took the man and woman aboard. During the transfer, the man fell overboard and was pulled out of the water by the Station Hobucken crew without injury. Both survivors were taken to Oriental Marina in Oriental.
