Yara, a Norwegian based scrubber supplier announced a change of leadership as Dr. Thomas Koniordos was introduced as the company’s new CEO. Koniordos, who up until September 18, served as Yara’s Head of Environmental Solutions, and also as Chairman of the Yara Marine Board, will succeed Peter Strandberg, the company's founder. Before joining Yara International in 2015 as head of the Environmental Business Line, Koniordos served for 14 years in various management functions and geographies in Danfoss.

"Koselig" is a Norwegian adjective used to describe situations that give a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation. The NorShipping exhibition and conference, one of the largest in northern Europe, could definitely be described as koselig. Occurring in Oslo, Norway between June 4-7, 2019, the conference featured close to 1,000 exhibitors from around the world. Norway-based emissions control technology company Yara Marine Technologies announced the successful installation of an inline hybrid scrubber system for an undisclosed customer in the ultra-large container segment."This is the biggest ship engine ever to be successfully fitted with an inline hybrid scrubber system," said a press release from the company that offers a complete SOx and NOx product portfolio to the marine segment.The project marks an important milestone in expanding areas where shipowners can achieve full and cost-efficient IMO compliance with SOx scrubbers. As the demand for its exhaust gas cleaning systems -- aka. 'scrubbers' -- has grown, Yara Marine Technologies  opened its new office in Shanghai. Peter Strandberg, CEO, Yara Marine, explains: “A large percentage of scrubber installations will be executed in the Asia-Pacific region. A strong local presence in Shanghai is key to global customer support and our business."To date Yara Marine has delivered more than 100 scrubbers representing an aggregate operation of some two million hours.

Many shipowners are scrambling to comply with the tough, new the International Maritime Organization (IMO) fuel global sulfur limit of 0.50 percent m/m, which takes effect January 1, 2020.It is expected that after the rules swing into force, the light-heavy fuel price spread will likely spike and refining margins will be higher, particularly for complex refineries.Shipowners have to stay ahead of the game, said Yara Marine Technologies CEO Peter Strandberg: “Shipowners often get a bad rap of refusing to adopt new, innovative technologies and processes.

Green Tech Marine has won a contract to deliver 21 exhaust gas cleaning systems (“scrubbers”) to an undisclosed ship-owner in first quarter 2015. By using Green Tech Marine scrubbers, ship owners can continue to operate on heavy fuel oil instead of more costly marine gas oil, while staying below the strict IMO requirements regarding sulphur emission. Sulphur oxides cause a wide variety of health and environmental impacts. With asthma being the largest children chronic disease in the Western world, authorities are addressing this issue through legislation.

Yara International will expand its emissions control business by acquiring a majority 63% stake in Green Tech Marine (GTM), a sulphur oxide (SOX) scrubber supplier to the marine industry. “New International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations are being implemented, and combining GTM with our existing Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) portfolio will help the maritime industry cleanse their emissions and be compliant,” said Yves Bonte, Senior Vice President and head of Yara’s Industrial Segment.

Green Tech Marine contracted to deliver four of its scrubber units to the Norwegian Cruise Line ship. The scrubbers will be installed in March during a dry dock in Pearl Harbor Naval shipyard. They will replace the ships silencers and clean the exhaust of four, 8 MW engines, in total 32 MW,  in what the manufacturers say is the biggest marine scrubber installation in the world at this time.
