Phase II of IMO’s Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Project Announced

The IMO and the European Commission (EC) have announced a second phase of the Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres Network (GMN) project, with funding from the EU.The aim of the second phase is to upscale the work of the five regional centres, with a particular emphasis on pilot demonstrations aimed at achieving quantifiable reductions in GHG emissions.The GMN Phase II project follows the successful Phase I which established the five Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs), in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific.

Making Hydrogen Work: Demo Project in San Francisco Port

Hornblower Energy LLC, in partnership with the Port of San Franciso, the U.S. Department of Energy and six corporate partners, including Air Liquide and Glosten, is leading a project to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of using hydrogen (H2) as a maritime fuel.The project is located at Pier 68 in San Francisco. DOE selected the project for funding in 2020. It’s supposed to be completed in 2025 but there are important decision dates before then. So far, project activities have concentrated on planning and modeling.

Greensea Advancing Autonomous Hull Cleaning for the US Navy

Marine software company Greensea Systems Inc. said it has recently been awarded a contract for a two-year Phase II Option Period by the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research to continue the technology development for an autonomous hull cleaning vehicle. Aframax Tanker Green Admire Delivered to Aegean Shipping

Aegean Shipping announced it has taken delivery of the newbuild Aframax tanker Green Admire. Port of Beaumont Starts Construction on Main Street Terminal I

The Port of Beaumont announced its Board of Commissioners have approved a $57.3 million construction bid for a project aimed at increasing the port’s general cargo handling capacity by more than 15%. Phase II of the Main Street Terminal 1 project, awarded to McCarthy Building Companies, includes demolition of a failed dock structure and construction of a new state-of-the-art general cargo dock. The Main Street Terminal 1 project, funded in part by 2017 General Obligation Bonds, a 2019 U.S. DOT BUILD grant, and Port revenues, is expected to be complete by June 2024.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Launches MRRV for Philippines DOT

Mitsubishi Wins Order for Philippine MRRVs

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, has concluded an agreement with the Republic of the Philippines to construct two multi-role response vessels (MRRVs).The vessels will be built at Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works for completion and delivery in 2022.The MRRVs on order are vessels with length overall of approximately 94 meters. They also have a maximum speed of not less than 24 knots, and an endurance of not less than 4,000 nautical miles.Both vessels will be equipped with secured communication systems for Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, helideck and a hangar for helicopter operations, an underwater remotely operated vehicle for subsurface search and survey, and high-speed rubber boats.

All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) has been named the West Coast shipyard by Birdon America, Inc., for Phase I of a contract to perform a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) on a number of United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) fleet of Motor Life Boats (MLB).AAM is currently working on two MLBs at its shop, with a plan to ramp up to eight MLB vessels each year during Phase II. Birdon America was awarded the prime contract to perform Service Life Extension work on all MLBs in the U.S. Coast Guard’s fleet.The current in-service MLBs were designed by the USCG and built from 1997 to 2003.

NSRP Awards Hepburn and Sons Laser Peening Work

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded Hepburn and Sons LLC with the “Onboard Ship Integration of Laser Peening System for Lasting Aluminum Repairs.” The project team is led by Hepburn and Sons LLC and includes LSP Technologies Inc., Vigor Shipyards, ABS and NSWC Carderock Division. The NSRP investment is $1.78M and the industry investment is $1.96M. The duration of the project is 24 Months. The primary scope is to install a laser peening system onboard the Littoral Combat Ship for pre-weld and post-weld laser peening operations.Phase I will focus on the design and build of a laser peening Procudo system and a Beam Deck Delivery System and finalizing certification at NSWC Carderock Division.

DSC Dredge Wins USACE Dredge Bid

DSC Dredge, LLC wins bid for a new, non-propelled, cutter suction head dredge solicited by The Marine Design Center (MDC) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) earlier this month. When completed, the new cutter suction head dredge will operate out of Astara, Azerbaijan to not only maintain the harbor depth and harbor entrance but the US Government is purchasing this dredge for the country of Azerbaijan as a part of Azerbaijan’s support of the US in anti-terrorism efforts.

Tekmar Bags Formosa 1 Phase 2 Gig

UK-based Tekmar Energy has been selected as the cable protection system (CPS) and hang off supplier for the 120-MW Formosa I Phase II offshore wind project in Taiwanese waters.A press note from the company announced that it has received the order from subsea power cable provider JDR Cables, part of TFKable Group.Tekmar will be providing approximately 60 cable protection systems and a further 60 hang off clamps which hold the subsea cable in place within the turbine transition piece.Formosa 1 Phase 2 is a project located 6km from the shore of Taiwan, consisting of 20 turbines and will provide a total of 122 MW in water depth of approximately 15-30m.
