Maersk Expands Foothold in Iran

Danish container shipping company Maersk Line has added Iranian Port of Bushehr to its services, expanding its presence in this Middle-Eastern country. The new port specializes in feeder transport facilities. From Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates, the first sailing on a direct and weekly feeder connection to Bushehr commenced on January 4, 2017. Bushehr is the largest and most important port for transportation of commercial goods within the Bushehr province in Iran. With a total throughput of 7 million tons, this port is capable of offering services for all containerized cargos, and most significantly refrigerated products. The firm has deployed Inter Sydney, a 3,400 TEU containership, in the service.

Iran-Venezuela Oil Tanker Deal Hit by Sanctions Snags

An agreement to build oil tankers in Iran for Venezuela has been left in limbo years after it was announced as Western sanctions plus disagreements over payments and delivery terms took their toll, sources familiar with the matter say. The deal was heralded in 2006 with much fanfare by Tehran and the socialist government of then-president Hugo Chavez to build four oil tankers in Iran on behalf of Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA as part of a wider global order for 42 ships. Maersk Withdrawal of Iran Service Perhaps a Game-changer

Maersk Line container ships no longer to call at Iran ports, closing off a major supply chain to the country. Maersk ended all cargo shipments to the Persian Gulf port of Bushehr on Sept. 30, and started refusing all outbound cargo on Sept. 24, making Iran's isolation from the world of trade almost complete, reports the 'Boston Globe'/Reuters. Those dates now seem to have been a precursor to the chaos in Iran last week, when its currency, the rial, plunged and protests against high food prices spread throughout the country. Bahrain, Iran Sea Link Examined

A team of businessmen and shipping officials from Bahrain plans to visit Iran to examine the possibility of launching a sea link between the two states, Bahrain's commerce minister said. Local newspapers quoted Ali Saleh al-Saleh as saying the team would meet officials from the public and private sectors in Tehran to discuss linking Bahrain's Salman Port and Iran's southern port of Bushehr. The two countries had agreed to discuss the sea link during a visit to Manama by Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi in March. Saleh said the sea link would open new markets to Bahrain's exports and would revive the re-export movement from Manama to Tehran. He said contacts were underway to prepare for the visit.
