KMW Enhances Cylinder Pressure Sensor

Germany's Kaufbeurer Mikrosysteme Wiedemann (KMW) has introduced a higher performance version of its Z01 sensor for measuring cylinder pressure in large diesel, gas and dual-fuel engines.“The further developments center on the measuring capability, accuracy and robustness of our Z01 sensors,” KMW project manager Daniel Maaß explains.“To facilitate the measurement of higher combustion pressures and to contribute to overall robustness, we have increased the temperature resistance of the sensing elements we use in the Z01 sensors. At the same time, new connection technology aims to improve overall resistance to both temperature and vibration.

Aker Bets on Software Engineers for Its Oil Business

When the owners of Norwegian oil firm Aker BP decided to digitise its assets and operations, they searched high and low for the right software company. But they failed to find a suitable one.So instead they set up their own, Cognite, to create digital maps of Aker BP's oil industry assets, integrating data from equipment such as pumps, heat and pressure sensors, maintenance records and even staff rotas to improve efficiency and safety.Less than two years later, Cognite is selling its software to Aker BP's rivals and one competitor, Sweden's Lundin Petroleum, has even agreed to share its real-time oilfield data with Aker in what they say is an industry first."This will be the first time two different operators…

World’s First High Temperature Accelerometer Unveiled

Kistler has introduced what it says is world’s first high temperature accelerometer for the monitoring of gas turbines. Designed for long-term use at up to 700° C, the piezoelectric sensor – made in Switzerland – is not pyroelectric and does not show any popcorn effect, offering manufacturers and operators of gas turbines new options for monitoring the combustion stability. The efficient and secure operation of gas turbines relies upon stable combustion processes. These have to comply with increasingly strict regulations, including flexible operation on different fuels and minimal emissions.

Tech File: New Cylinder Pressure Sensor Helps Optimize Large Engines

The shipping sector is constantly striving to optimize the efficiency of large engines. This endeavor calls for new approaches and innovative products. Each percentage point of efficiency gained here has an immense impact on fuel consumption and emissions. Kistler responds to the trend toward higher cylinder pressures in engines (up to 300 bar) with its rugged, accurate and durable measurement systems. The efficiency of large engines such as those used on commercial vessels can be increased with the help of cylinder pressure sensors that precisely monitor the combustion process.

HHI Inks Local Equipment MOU

Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced today it has signed a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Establishment of Industrial Cluster for Localizing Marine Equipment Between Marine Equipment Manufacturing and Supply Companies” at Hotel Hyundai Ulsan. Under the MOU, HHI will join forces with KOMERI, a domestic marine equipment research institute and 25 local marine equipment manufacturers to cooperate in the field of research and planning, product development, verification test, certification and engineer exchanges. Starting with the goal of localizing 18 marine equipment including pressure sensors for marine engines and gas injection valves, the three parties plan to increase production of the equipment that they can produce independently.

American Sensor Technologies Achieves ATEX Certification

American Sensor Technologies, Inc. (AST) has achieved ATEX certification of its Explosion Proof Pressure Transmitters for Class I Zone 0 Exd hazardous locations. The added approvals enhance the ability for equipment manufacturers to specify AST pressure transducers as the sensors can now operate in both North America and Europe. AST Explosion Proof Pressure Transducers are commonly used in upstream and offshore applications where safety, reliability and performance are crucial. Additionally, the AST4300 Non-Incendive Rugged Pressure Transmitter Series is qualified as ATEX Class I Zone 0 Exd and the AST43LP Low Presssure Non-Incendive Pressure Sensor Series holds a ATEX Class I Zone 2 Ex nA rating. Each are also certified by Sira for Class I Zone 2 Ex nA IIC T4 Gc.

New Possibilities for Imaging Measurement

With its staggering ability to show displacements of submillimeter scale to stern waves of several meters high, the Digital Image Correlation technique has been applied on a  wide range of projects at MARIN. Examples from research programs in controlled conditions and full-scale trials are highlighted. In some situations conventional sensors cannot be applied. For example, when the sensors alter the hydro-dynamical or structural properties of the object or, when the sensor capabilities are simply too limited. However, Digital Image Correlation can provide a solution.

CMR Debuts Gas Engine Pressure Regulator

A range of gas engine pressure regulators, which provide control of pressure levels within the fuel train on dual fuel or natural gas engines, is new for control and instrumentation specialists CMR Group. CMR’s regulators enable high-pressure gas fuel from lines and tanks to be reduced to safe and/or usable pressures for the secure and reliable operation of high horsepower engine technology used in a wide range of harsh and challenging environments including the onshore/offshore oil and gas industry.

Advancing Monitoring Requires Advanced Oversight

Recent severe storms in the U.K. North Sea have resulted in a number of floating production, storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs) being shut down in order to assess and repair the damage caused. Notwithstanding the possible safety implications for operations crew, oil and gas majors are facing weeks, if not months without a critical asset which in turn, is having a significant impact on future production. The design and operation of an FPSO in remote locations requires detailed information on the structural response of the vessel within the local environment offshore.

3rd CIMAC CASCADES: Seminar for Younger Engineers

The third staging of the CIMAC CASCADES seminar for younger engineers and students took place at the ETH Swiss Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland on June 8, 2012. Organized by the CIMAC National Member Association (NMA) in Switzerland, the Division Combustion Engines of the Swiss Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industries (Swissmem), the event was considered a considerable success by all attendees. In what may become the standard framework for a CASCADES event, the seminar itself was preceded on 7th June 2012 by a visit to a member company’s facility.

Sonardyne Retrieves Pressure Inverted Echo Sounder

Sonardyne International has retrieved its first Pressure Inverted Echo Sounder (PIES) off the coast of Hawaii. This new sensor logging node is designed to accurately measure the average sound velocity through a column of water from the seabed to the sea surface. The information gathered will help oceanographers to better understand the dynamics of the ocean and atmosphere-ocean coupling. On September 24, the Sonardyne PIES was free-fall deployed into a 960-meter deep water channel close to the big island of Hawaii, and commanded to log average sound velocity readings every seven minutes.
