Five Minutes with George Whittier, CEO, Fairbanks Morse

Fairbanks Morse recently won an order by Huntington Ingalls Industries to build and deliver the four main propulsion diesel engines that will power the U.S. Navy’s newest Landing Platform/Dock (LPD) ship, LPD 31, the second of 13 in the LPD Flight II class of ships. Fairbanks Morse Wins Contract to Supply Main Engines for LPD 31

U.S.-based Fairbanks Morse said it has been awarded a purchase order by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) to build and deliver the four main propulsion diesel engines that will power the U.S. Navy’s newest San Antonio Class Landing Platform/Dock (LPD) ship, LPD 31. The ship is the second of 13 in the LPD Flight II class of ships.The four sequentially turbocharged 16-cylinder FM | Colt-Pielstick PC 2.5 diesel engines feature common rail fuel injection technology and will deliver over 31 MW of propulsion power.

MAN Rollo Supplies Engines for Hybrid Patrol Boat

In April this year, MAN Rollo supplied two engines for the RPA8 hybrid patrol boat, which Kooiman Shipyard was commissioned to build by the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Wärtsilä Engines To Power Queen Mary 2

Wärtsilä Corporation will deliver four Wärtsilä 46 EnviroEngines totaling 67.2 MW power output for Cunard Line's new luxury transatlantic liner, Queen Mary 2. These engines will incorporate the latest common-rail fuel injection technology for operation without any visible smoke. Due for delivery in late 2003 by the French shipbuilder Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, the "Queen Mary 2" will be the world's largest passenger vessel. Measuring 345 m long by 40 m beam and drawing 10 m, the 150,000 grt liner will have a maximum speed of about 30 knots. Electrical power for propulsion and all shipboard services will be generated by a 115.5 MW combined diesel- and gas turbine-electric power plant.

MAN Diesel Engines to Power Mega Vessel

The Offshore Division of MAN Diesel, based in Frederikshavn, Denmark, has extended its phase of growth. The new order calls for the supply of generator sets with a combined output of almost 95 MW for what will be, dimensionally, the largest vessel in existence and will include working functions which also set world records in their specialist field. Moreover, the contract will also involve the first vee-configuration engines to be produced in MAN Diesel’s new four-stroke medium-speed engine series, the 560 kW per cylinder 32/44 CR with common-rail fuel-injection technology. This new mega-vessel has been ordered by the Swiss-based Allseas Group S.A., an offshore installation contractor, and is a twin-hull construction with main dimensions 1,181 ft. long by 383 ft. wide.

MAN Diesel Supplies CR Engine, Propellers and GenSets for STENA Super Ferries

In a contract involving the world’s largest Ro-Pax ferries, MAN Diesel will supply complete propulsion packages based on its latest common rail engine, the medium speed 48/60 CR. The two new ferries are to be built by the Aker Yards Group for the STENA LINE. At 62,000 GT and 240 metres overall, the newbuildings feature a record-breaking 5,500 metres of trailer lanes, 700 metres of car lanes and facilities for 1,200 passengers. They are due to be delivered from Aker Yards’ facilities in Germany during 1st and 3rd quarters of 2010. Coral Princess Employs Innovation in Propulsion

Coral Princess’ propulsion system is the first in the cruise industry to fully utilize a new development of the diesel engine known as an EnviroEngine, as well as the first in the Princess fleet to incorporate gas turbine power generation. This combination uses technology proven to be both highly efficient and environmentally sound, and, in a unique design development where the gas turbine is installed in the ship funnel, provides additional space for a wider range of public rooms and onboard facilities. Coral Princess is powered by one gas turbine that operates in conjunction with two diesel EnviroEngines. The turbine replaces at least two diesel engines and by using two separate power systems, this unique one-of-a-kind configuration creates a very reliable and safe energy source.
