EU Backs Migrant Crisis Naval Plan

EU foreign ministers have agreed to launch a military mission against migrant smugglers in the Mediterranean. The decision allows European governments to move ahead with plans for a naval operation. European naval forces will intercept and destroy ships used by smugglers of migrants from North Africa. The aim of the program is to stop smugglers with human cargo before or shortly after they leave the shores of North African nations like Libya. European navies would then return migrants to African ports and destroy the ships used to transport them. But that will require authorization from the U.N. Security Council, which has begun to consider the matter.

Broken-legged Sailor Evacuated to Oman Hospital

EU Naval Force Flagship, 'ITS San Giusto' provides urgent medical help for a merchant seaman off the Horn of Africa. The sailor, a crew member of Bahamas flagged merchant vessel MV Anna Victoria had broken both his legs following an accident at sea and the EU flagship, which was conducting counter-piracy patrols nearby, was able to respond quickly by sending her helicopter, with a medical team onboard. The medical team provided immediate first aid and pain relief, before the sailor was flown to Salalah in Oman, where he is now receiving further hospital treatment.
