Update on Norfolk Navy Yard Shooting

Capt. "First of all, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the Sailor killed last night. This is a very difficult and sad time for our Navy family. At this moment, we are in the process of notifying the Sailor's next of kin and I would ask that you please respect their privacy at this very difficult time. Information about our Sailor will come at the appropriate time and today is not the day. I can tell you . . . at approximately 11:20 p.m. [Tuesday night] there was a shooting on board USS Mahan at Pier 1.

Virginia-Class Boats Sailing Into Action

By Lt. Out of the nine fast-attack boats underway in the , four of them are Virginia-class submarines. USS Virginia (SSN 774), USS Texas (SSN 775), USS North Carolina (SSN 777) and Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) (SSN 778) are all currently conducting exercises and tests off the Atlantic coast. USS Hawaii (SSN 776), the first Virginia-class boat to deploy, is currently at General Dynamics Electric Boat conducting a post-shakedown availability, an industrial activity availability assigned to correct deficiencies found during the shakedown cruise or to accomplish other authorized improvements.
