NOV Wins Offshore Wind Vessel Deal in China

Chinese shipbuilder China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) has awarded NOV a contract to design and supply equipment for GustoMSC NG-14000XL-G wind turbine installation jack-up vessel to be built for OHT, a Norwegian heavy transport and installation contractor."In close collaboration with VIND Offshore Installation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of OHT, the design is specifically tailored to create a next-generation offshore wind installation unit with a significantly reduced carbon footprint," the company, which last year changed its name from National Oilwell Varco to NOV, said.

Maersk Drilling: First Order for "Chela" Crane

Maersk Drilling awarded GustoMSC the first order for the uniquely designed crane Chela, which is to be installed on Maersk Invincible (GustoMSC CJ70 design) which is currently operating on Valhall for AkerBP. Chela is desgined to improve safe handling underneath the cantilever and reduce total time spent on wells. Chela offers an extra hand in operations as, due to its crablike motion characteristics, it can reach below the cantilever as well as elevate towards the main deck, providing crane access to an area traditionally blocked by the cantilever when drilling.

GustoMSC Evolves Chela the "Smart" Crane

Nearly two years ago GustoMSC introduced a smart crane for lifting and wireline operations under the drilling cantilever. Two years later, following industry feedback and further development, the equipment has evolved into Chela, named after the Greek word for a crab’s claw. Chela offers an extra hand in operations, and due to its crablike motion characteristics, it can reach below the cantilever as well as elevate towards the main deck, providing crane access to an area traditionally blocked by the cantilever when drilling.
