Royal Caribbean Group named Palle Laursen as executive vice president, head of marine, effective May 1, 2023. Cargoes have come off ships at sea it seems like forever. Some years ago a ship suffered a casualty transiting the English Channel in a storm. Much of its cargo of lumber and other floating items washed ashore on the southwest English coast. Before the authorities could arrive, enterprising local residents gathered it up.Nowadays, the majority of non-bulk cargo is carried in containers. Container ships have gotten larger and are capable of carrying thousands and thousands of containers. The ships have greater length, greater breadth, and greater draft. They also have greater air draft.

Two Danish companies have joined forces to test a novel workboat stabilizer for the first time at sea.DACOMA’s groundbreaking Airkeel-technology will be integrated on a 7-meter test vessel from Tuco Marine's ProZero workboat range to demonstrate heel compensation and optimization of roll damping in waves.The DACOMA stabilizer is based on the Airkeel, a submerged, air-filled flotation body mounted at the bottom of the hull. In 2024, Denmark will be hosting European Maritime Day with more than 1,000 participants. With its maritime surroundings, the city of Svendborg will be the setting of the conference, said a press release from Danish Maritime Authority. European Maritime Day is one of Europe's largest maritime conferences. The Council of the European Union has awarded Denmark the honour of hosting the conference in 2024. Earlier this year, the Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs nominated Svendborg as the Danish candidate city. It will be the first time that the conference is held in Denmark, and the Municipality of Svendborg will be at the centre of it all.

Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) will be hosting meetings on port State control (PSC) inspections  for shore-based and ship-based employees. The purpose is to engage in a dialogue on onboard safety and on how ships can prepare for PSC  inspections. The meeting is an opportunity to exchange experiences gained from PSC inspections. Together we will discuss how to improve safety and, thereby, avoid non-conformities and detentions and how the shore-based organisation can best support the crew in connection with PSC inspections. Student exchanges, faculty collaborations and programmatic partnerships are now possible between the United States’ SUNY Maritime College and Svendborg International Maritime Academy in Denmark. The two institutions earlier this month signed a memorandum of agreement that will pave the way for academic cooperation and knowledge sharing. “The shipping industry is international by nature,” said Joseph Hoffman, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Maritime.

Cathelco announced that its Evolution ballast water treatment (BWT) system has begun shipboard testing for U.S. Coast Guard Type Approval. The system has been installed on the Svendborg Strait a 1,085 TEU containership owned by Carsten Rehder of Hamburg. “From the start of this project to the final completion we appreciate the care and attention to detail from Cathelco, leading to a smooth, trouble free installation. We are very pleased with the outcome and look forward to continuing our relationship with Cathelco,” said Julian Glogowski, technical director at Carsten Rehder.

With the SOLAS Convention now requiring container weight verification from 1st July 2016 onwards following the amendment approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) last November, the Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) jointly with the Indian Maritime Administration conducted a Conference on “Safe Containers Steering Changes” on 10th December at The Lalit, Mumbai. The objective of the conference being to bring together various stakeholders in the container supply chain and provide an opportunity for an in-depth understanding of the different issues and their implications. Deepak Shetty, the Director General of Shipping and Additional Secretary, Government of India, stated that the Indian Maritime Administration was totally prepared to implement the new requirement.

Established in 2009, Svendborg, Denmark-based Nadiro manufactures high-quality lifeboat and rescue craft systems, developing and promoting its Drop-in-BallTM technology to help ensure crew safety. VIKING has had the status of Preferred Distributor and Service Provider, supplying the company’s LRRSs (lifeboat release and retrieval systems) to enable the world’s shipowners to comply with new SOLAS regulations by or before 2019. Hook retrofitting is necessary to prevent serious accidents resulting from unsafe lifeboat deployment systems.

Accroding to a statement issued on behalf of the A.P.Moller-Maersk Group, container vessel Svendborg Maersk lost a significant number of containers overboard during very rough weather in the Bay of Biscay. On Friday, February 14, the container vessel Svendborg Maersk encountered very rough weather in the Bay of Biscay while en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, leading to minor vessel damage and the loss of a significant number of containers. The crew is safe and accounted for. Maersk said weather conditions at the time of the incident were severe, with wind blowing 60 knots and waves reaching 10 m.

NCC-owned dredger benefits from recent PrimeServ exchange and modernisation of propeller blades & propeller nozzle – with payback time of just 1½ years

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s PrimeServ division in Frederikshavn has, in close cooperation with shipowner and constructional engineering company NCC, performed a propulsion equipment upgrade for the ‘M/V Baltic’, a 900 m³ sand and gravel dredger. NCC has a fleet of five ships and was, as a starting point, interested in the upgrade of the Baltic.

Kongsberg Maritime is providing maritime simulators for Maersk's new State-of-the-art drilling operations and offcshore training facility. Kongsberg Maritime simulators have been selected for the forthcoming MOSAIC 2 facility (Maersk Offshore Simulation and Innovation Centre) at Maersk Training in Svendborg, Denmark. Building officially commenced on the state-of-the-art new facility on the Maersk Training campus on 29th November 2011. A frame agreement signed by Kongsberg Maritime and Maersk Training on December 12th 2011 covers delivery of a range of simulators and ongoing support that will act as the platform for high quality offshore drilling operations training at MOSAIC 2.

East Isle Shipyard in Prince Edward Island , Canada, a division of Irving Shipbuilding Inc., has delivered the first of four tugs to Nordane Shipping, Svendborg, Denmark on the 8th of September 2009. Present at the christening from the owner's side were Niels Hansen and Flemming Hansen along with their wive’s. The new Ice Class Tug was christened by the wife of the President of Irving Shipbuilding, Inc., Karen Durrell, her husband Steve Durrell hosted the event. The tug, Stevns Icequeen had undergone sea trials and was accepted by the owner as meeting all of the specification requirements.

Maersk Sealand, part of Danish A.P. Moeller shipping and oil group, expects container rates to rise on the world`s main routes despite an economic slowdown in the U.S. "We are talking about increasing container rates by $525 per container from Asia to the U.S. We do expect higher rates from Asia to Europe and from Europe to the U.S. this year," Jesper Kjaedegaard, Maersk Sealand deputy director, said. Kjaedegaard`s remarks echoed uncertainty over a possible looming U.S. recession denting world trade and with it container traffic. Investment fund Carnegie World-Wide has halved its five percent stake in Moeller company D/S Svendborg to 2.5 percent due to the gloomy U.S. outlook, Danish financial daily Borsen said on Tuesday. "We believe the company will suffer relatively badly if U.S.

Shares in A.P. Moeller dropped three percent after news reports container traffic growth was slowing due to the weaker U.S. economy. At 1005 GMT Moeller's two shares, D/S 1912 and D/S Svendborg, traded at 81,000 crowns ($10,097) and 108,000 crowns respectively, down 3.0 and 2.7 percent compared to closing prices on Friday. Container traffic and freight rates may tumble this year compared to 2000, denting Moeller's profits. Analysts told Borsen that Moeller was poised to lose five billions crowns in revenue this year compared to 2000, primarily due to lower rates for Pacific traffic. "We might well return to a normal growth scenario in 2001 and not see two-digit growth rates as we did last year.

Danish A.P. Moeller shares rebounded on Friday after news of its purchase of Dutch tug and salvage company Wijsmuller Group Holding on Thursday, brokers said. The two A P Moeller stocks, D/S 1912 and D/S Svendborg, traded at 69,500 crowns ($7,898) and 91,500 crowns respectively, 2.2 percent and 1.7 percent up from Thursday's close. The Copenhagen bourse's top 20 index KFX was down 0.4 percent at 316.15. Moeller shares have underperformed the KFX index by more than three percent the past 10 days, dented by news that Morgan Stanley within a year would cut the conglomerate's weight in its Denmark index. "The shares are rebounding on the Dutch news and it seems foreign sale pressure in the shares has faded," a trader said.

Like her predecessors, EMMA MÆRSK and ESTELLE MÆRSK, ELEONORA MÆRSK will be part of the series of the world’s largest container vessels. Ships in this series will set new standards for safety and environment. Environmentally friendly silicone paint covers the hull of the vessel below the waterline – reducing water resistance and cutting the vessel’s fuel consumption by 1,200 tonnes per year.

On August 25, 2007 Odense Steel Shipyard presented its latest newbuilding, an 11,000 TEU container vessel, for the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. Leise Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller honored A.P. Moller - Maersk and the Yard by naming the newbuilding Elly Maersk. Like her five predecessors, Elly Maersk will be part of the series of the world’s largest container vessels, and she will like her sister vessels set new standards for safety and environment. Environmentally friendly silicone paint covers the hull of the vessel below the waterline – reducing water resistance and cutting the vessel’s fuel consumption by 1,200 tons per year. With its 14-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex diesel engine which develops 110,000 bhp, Elly Maersk will enter Maersk Line’s worldwide service after delivery.
