Markey Machine won a first-ever contract from SAAM Towage to retrofit the controls on a Timberland towing winch aboard the Point Valiant, a tug based in Vancouver, B.C.SAAM first outlined the project to Markey last May, then hired Sentinel Survey, Markey’s after-market service division, to undertake on-site inspection of the winch. Following inspection, Markey offered its Class I winch-control package, and SAAM responded with an order near the end of December. Norwegian offshore support vessel owner Solstad Offshore has agreed to sell 37 platform supply vessels to the U.S. firm Tidewater for $577 million.The sale will mark Solstad Offshore's exit from the platform supply vessel sector. Ongoing PSV charter parties will be transferred to Tidewater. Solstad will offer management services to Tidewater in a transition period to facilitate a smooth transfer for the parties and the customers.The offshore employees associated with the PSV Fleet will be offered employment with Tidewater.

Inland Marine Service, Inc. Ross Glendinning was appointed Senior Vice President, Service Division of Alfa Laval Inc. in January 2016. Glendinning is charged with driving consistent profitable growth, and developing new sales opportunities for the service business of Alfa Laval in the U.S. His responsibilities include leading parts sales, reconditioning services, field services and technical support activities. Glendinning joined Alfa Laval in 1982 as Marine Engineer for the company’s military products group.

MAN Diesel & Turbo signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the China Classification Society (CCS) on December 1, 2015, during Marintec China 2015. The Agreement provides for the strengthening of the cooperation between the two companies in Intelligent Ship research with regards to data exchange, online monitoring and online service. Wayne Jones – recently appointed as Executive Board Member for Sales from January 1, 2016 – MAN Diesel & Turbo, and Sun Feng – Vice President – CCS, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.

SCHOTTEL, a German manufacturer of marine propulsion systems, has invested a total of €45 million to open a new state-of-the-art Rudderpropeller factory, increasing the company’s production capacity by roughly 30 percent. The factory, near its headquarters in Spay, Germany, was officially opened in the summer of 2015 following a construction period of about two years. It features four production shops (up to 270 meters long and 18 meters high) and a three-storey building for administration, social and technical purposes.

MAN PrimeServ Turbocharger, part of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s service division, has signed a Premium Turbocharger Maintenance Contract with Anglo-Eastern Ship Management. Under the terms of the agreement, PrimeServ will provide all relevant services complete maintenance package. The deal covers approximately 330 turbochargers installed aboard vessels from the Anglo-Eastern’s worldwide fleet – essentially a mixture of NA/TCA axial types for main engines, and NR/TCR radial types for auxiliary engines.

MAN PrimeServ, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s service division, has announced the 100th sale of its Pressure Measuring Instrument (PMI) Auto-tuning retrofit package. The MSC Filippa, a 2011-built, 13,400-teu containership owned by Germany’s Peter Döhle Group, will be retrofitted to accommodate the system. Hagen Koslowski, Technical Director of Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG, said, “The main driver for us in ordering PMI Auto-tuning was to reduce fuel consumption and therefore become more attractive to the charter market.

Closing ceremonies for two training courses carried out by EUCAP Nestor in cooperation with authorities were held on November 14 in the Seychelles. Working with the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) and consultant Ade Walton from Prozeus, Tyne and Wear Marine (TWM) has spent the last year developing the Bollard Load Test (BLT), which uses a powerful hydraulic ram and specialist torque rope to recreate more than 100 metric tons of ‘pull’ when safely testing marine bollards. This breakthrough replaces the traditional method of a tug pulling against the bollard, a method that has previously caused damage to vessels and can be dangerous to the people involved in the test.

Hawaiian Tug & Barge, which provides harbor support services in all major ports of Hawaii, has adopted new colors and a new name: Foss Maritime Company. Founded by Young Brothers Ltd., Hawaiian Tug & Barge (HTB) was formed as a sister company to separate harbor operations and charter activities from Young Brothers' inter-island freight operations. HTB has since become Hawaii's leading tug and barge transportation company operating four tugs with 20 employees. Young Brothers and HTB joined the Foss Maritime group of companies in 1999.

Siemens plans to build a new, state-of-the-art wind turbine service training facility in Orlando, Florida. The demand for skilled wind service technicians is increasing as more wind projects come online in the Americas, thereby requiring long-term service and maintenance. Siemens is designing this new 40,000-square-foot center, which will be located close to the global headquarters of Siemens’ Energy Service division in Orlando, to be among the most advanced wind training facilities in the world. Siemens’ initial investment will be approximately $7 million and the company plans to create 50 new full-time jobs and host approximately 2,400 trainees annually from the U.S. and the Americas.

Really, it’s a case of having introduced the right technology at the right time and the slide fuel-valve’s strong market performance is testimony to the fuel savings and increased environmental profile it brings to working vessels.

First introduced at the turn of the millennium, MAN PrimeServ – MAN Diesel & Turbo’s service division – recently retrofitted its 20,000th slide fuel-valve. Slide fuel-valves come as standard on all new MAN B&W engines but can also be retrofitted on MC engines. The slide fuel-valve eliminates the so-called "sac volume," which reduces fuel-oil consumption and, furthermore, eliminates dripping from the fuel-valve nozzle. Compared to conventional valves, the slide fuel-valve has NOx-reduction potential. According to MAN, the reduced sac volume leads to an improved combustion process, resulting in fewer deposits throughout the gas ways and a reduction in overall emissions, such as HC, NOx and particulate matter.
