Foss Maritime Co. will lay off its 60 workers and leave the Columbia River, OregonLive.com reported. OregonLive said the Seattle company will sell its Columbia River business to Tidewater Barge Lines, which moves grain and other cargo along the Columbia-Snake river system, pitting Tidewater against Shaver Transportation Co. in another line of business, transporting river pilots and maneuvering large cargo vessels in and out of ports. Sundial Marine Construction and Repair, Inc., of Troutdale, Ore., signed a contract to build two new grain barges for Shaver Transportation Co. The Shaver barges will be 273 x 42 ft. wide, and are designed to carry 120,000 bushels of grain on the Columbia River inland waterway system. The barges were designed by J. Cameron McKernon Company for Shaver Transportation. Sundial Marine will work closely with Far West Steel to complete the team approach to this project. Shaver are due to be completed within the fourth quarter of 2001. This marks Sundial's return to the new construction marketplace after an idle period of several years since the last grain barges were built by Sundial.
