The port of Rotterdam has for the first time refueled a methanol-powered container ship as the shipping industry turns to the technology to cut its emissions, methanol producer OCI Global said on Tuesday.The Maersk-owned ship began its 21,500 km (13,359 mile) journey to Copenhagen from South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard on July 10.It also refuelled in Singapore, another major shipping hub before its stop-over on Tuesday in Rotterdam, Europe's largest port and ship-refueling hub, as the entire voyage is powered by green methanol.A low carbon fuel, green methanol is produced from renewable feed

An Italian ice-breaker carrying scientists researching in the Antarctic has sailed further south than any ship has done before, the organizers of the voyage said on Tuesday, a further sign of how ice is retreating around the poles.The Laura Bassi vessel reached a point with the coordinates of 78° 44.280 S in the Bay of Whales in the Ross Sea, according to Italy’s National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics.The voyage was made possible by an unusual lack of ice in the area, it said.

A cruise ship idling without passengers came to the aid of a small craft in distress in international waters 37 miles off the coast of Palm Beach, Fla., on Saturday.Upon seeing the boat in the water, the 855-foot Carnival Sensation maneuvered alongside the craft and provided blankets, life jackets, food and water to the 24 people on board, which included individuals from various nationalities and two children, operator Carnival Cruise Line said.When the boat began taking on water, Carnival Sensation rescued all 24 individuals and brought them on board.

Ultra-luxury cruise ship Europa 2 has had its cold ironing connection certified by classification society DNV GL following testing of the undisrupted use and compatibility of the shore-to-ship power system in the Port of Hamburg.While idled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Europa 2 has been using cold ironing at the Cruise Center Altona in Hamburg for the past 30 days, reportedly marking the first time a cruise ship has been using cold ironing for a long period of time.Europa 2, with a maximum of 500 passengers requires 2.2 megawatts (MW) of power per hour during its lay time.

ONE Commitment started her maiden voyage from Singapore on 15 May 2018 and has already called at Laem Chabang, Cai Mep and Kaohsiung before arriving at the Port of Yantian, China. She will continue her journey to Tacoma and Vancouver. When returning to Asia, she will call at Ports of Tokyo, Kobe, Kaohsiung and Singapore.

GT USA welcomed to the Canaveral Cargo Terminal (CCT) the M.V. Seatrade Red on its maiden call to the United States. The 607-foot M.V. Seatrade Red, a specialized reefer container vessel with a capacity of 2,259 TEUs and 674 reefer plugs, was built at China’s Yangfan Shipyard and officially launched in May 2016 as one of Seatrade Group’s four new Colour Class vessels. On November 20, Joe Cruise, commercial manager of GT USA; and Alberto Cabrera, senior director, Cargo Sales, Canaveral Port Authority marked the vessel call by presenting commemorative plaques to Captain S. Poryadin of the M.V.

Just down river from Damen Song Cam Shipyard, SAL Heavy Lift’s MV Svenja departed from Halong Bay loaded with 14 vessels. The shipment consists primarily of built-for-stock vessels – Stan Pontoons and Tugs – which will be available for immediate purchase on arrival in Rotterdam in October. MV Svenja’s voyage began in Shanghai on August 30th when she started loading eight Stan Pontoons that were built at Damen Yichang Shipyard, China. This first load includes Stan Pontoons 4113, 4111, 4512, 5211 and 6316.

Cruise ship MV Adonia sailed into Havana this morning, completing the first leg of its historic inaugural voyage to Cuba that began on May 1, 2016, from Miami, marking the first time in over 50 years that a U.S. cruise line has sailed from the U.S. to Cuba. The Bermuda-flagged ship Adonia, operated by U.S. based Fathom, the 10th and newest brand of Carnival Corporation & plc., was greeted in the Port of Havana by fanfare and a festive celebration. Havana is the first of three destinations that guests will visit as part of the Fathom’s seven-night voyages to Cuba.

A report in AP says, so far this shipping season, not only have the number of calls increased, but so has the amount of cargo. It has tripled since last year. It was a novel concept when the CCPA came up with the idea last year. Local businesses could have their products loaded on a ship in the Port of Cleveland and send them directly to Europe. It has been smooth sailing for the Cleveland-Europe Express (CEE). The CEE handles an assortment of containerized cargo including scrap metal, foodstuffs, retail goods, and even machinery.
