A vessel’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 7.3% by using voyage optimization software, a recent study shows. Fjord1 Orders Seven Battery-Powered Ferries with Havyard

Havyard Group will be delivering the design for seven battery-powered ferries to Norwegian transportation company Fjord1, five of which will be built at the company’s own shipyard. Havyard and Fjord1 will thereby continue their partnership to achieve a green revolution on the Norwegian fjords. With this contract, Havyard Group has orders for 13 battery ferries at its own yard and has sold 12 battery ferry designs. Siemens and CD-adapco have entered into a stock purchase agreement for the acquisition of CD-adapco by Siemens. The purchase price is $970 million. CD-adapco is a global engineering simulation company with software solutions covering a wide range of engineering disciplines including Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Solid Mechanics (CSM), heat transfer, particle dynamics, reactant flow, electrochemistry, acoustics and rheology. Last fiscal year, CD-adapco had over 900 employees and revenue of close to $200 million with software-typical double digit margins.

HydroComp Releases New NavCad Premium Edition

HydroComp is releasing a major upgrade for its NavCad software tool, the company announced today. NavCad has been used for resistance and propulsion prediction for nearly three decades, and a "Premium Edition" is now available for users wanting a greater level of analytical capability. New features include a scripting (macro) API. This includes an easy-to-use scripting language that provides batch processing capability. Premium users will also be able to run NavCad from third-party software, including spreadsheets or simulation tools, as a calculation engine (i.e., coupled solver).

Bureau Veritas Acquires HydrOcean

Testing, inspection and certification firm Bureau Veritas announced it has finalized the acquisition of HydrOcean, a French engineering company specializing in hydrodynamic digital simulation for the maritime industry. HydrOcean was established in 2007 to provide design support for the construction of ships, offshore structures, racing yachts and marine energy systems, with a focus on assessing and optimizing hydrodynamic performance. Bureau Veritas said HydrOcean’s services and simulation tools help reduce the risks, time and costs associated with ship design in a market driven by sustained demand from the shipping, offshore and yachting industries, and the emerging marine renewable energy sector.

USMRC, ClassNK Ink Joint Research Deal

The United States Maritime Resource Center (USMRC) in Middletown, Rhode Island and ClassNK have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) laying out a framework for future technical cooperation to carry out joint research and development activities for the maritime industry. This will mark the first time a major ship classification society has teamed with a prominent marine operations simulation center engaged in specialized training and research in North America.
