NAPA, ClassNK Team on New Data Link to Support 3D Ship Design

Upgraded data linkage designed to enable the seamless flow of information between design and class approval software, reducing time spent on information transfer by 30% and fostering closer collaboration.NAPA and ClassNK recently fortified their partnership to support the use of 3D models in the ship design approval process by streamlining data sharing between design and class approval software. “As the capabilities of 3D computer-aided design software improve, we see an acceleration in the use of 3D technologies in the shipbuilding industry," said Dr.

Pesquera Diamante Upgrades Its Design Software

Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC) of Vancouver, Canada has been supplying the marine industry with its Autoship Pro (hull design) and Autohydro Pro (hydrostatics and stability) software for over 40 years. These two programs combined has resulted in many hundreds, if not thousands of ships at sea, including ocean going fish trawlers.Pesquera Diamante in Lima, Peru is a current Autoship System user that has engineered over a dozen purse seiner vessels for its integrated operations that include a fish processing facility, using our hull design and hydrostatics programs.

Exploring Class Approvals, Supported by CAD

ABS software supports designs across most vessel sectors. This pilot project focused on tug and barge designs, producing promising results.Jensen Maritime, the naval architecture and marine engineering arm of Crowley Maritime Corp, and ABS have completed a precedent-setting pilot project using three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) models to support plan reviews for class approval. In what is believed to be an industry first, the innovative pilot was not proprietary to specific brands of CAD software, allowing designers to use the versions with which they are most familiar, or those that are best suited to the design project.Saving Time and MoneyIn eliminating the need to create 2D drawings to submit for the class design-review process…

Napa, ABS Team on Safehull Express

The ongoing collaboration between Napa Ltd and ABS has culminated in the recent release of a new version of SafeHull, called SafeHull Express. SafeHull Express is used for the design and assessment of ship structures in accordance with the ABS rules. The new and upcoming versions of ABS SafeHull Express are based on NAPA technology and functions, developed through cooperation between Napa Ltd and ABS Americas. The joining of forces has resulted in the integration of a complete initial strength assessment system into the shipyard production process. This is the first time such integration has been achieved. The fundamental benefit of integration is that a single 3D ship model can be used consistently in various system environments, which makes the design-to-production process one continuum.

Germanischer Lloyd Opens Lab in Hamburg

The examination of metallic materials and failure analysis for the sectors of ship operation systems, civil engineering, plant technology and machinery will now also be offered in Hamburg by GLP, the testing laboratory of Germanischer Lloyd. To complement the branches in Mülheim, Herne and Stuttgart, the operating area of materials testing and failure analysis is being expanded into the North German region. The service spectrum of routine materials testing includes destructive and non-destructive tests, metallography, corrosion examinations, chemical analyses as well as investigations employing light-optical and scanning electron microscopy.
