Container Shipping: "Fluctuating fortunes for Ocean and Air Freight out of Far East

While spot rates head in the right direction for ocean freight from the Far East to the South America East coast, short-term air freight rates are failing to take off on major intra-Asian and long haul trades, according to Xeneta.“Certainly, as far as ocean freight rates are concerned, the long-term market tends to play catch-up with the spot market, with around a three-month delay,” said Peter Sand, Chief Analyst, Xeneta. “So, for example, the fall in spot rates we began to see in January on trades from the Far East to South America was reflected in April and the following months.

ONE Expands Asia-South America Service

New 11,000 TEU Ship Enters Service for Zim

The newly built 11,000 TEU vessel Cape Sounio owned by Costamare has been deployed on Zim’s Asia South America East Coast (ASE), the Israeli container shipping company said. The vessel embarked on its maiden voyage on from Pusan, South Korea, on May 4, on its regular route calling ports in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, connecting to major Asian ports. Built at Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Philippines (HHIC Phil) and delivered in April, 2017, Cape Sounio is the largest vessel to serve in this line and the largest currently employed by ZIM.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) made its first port call in Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) in Batumi, Georgia, marking the launch of Gioia-Ukraine & Georgia feeder service, says International Container Terminal Services, Inc.(ICTSI). “M/V Max Carrier made its first call to Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) in Batumi, Georgia, marking the launch of the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) Gioia -- Ukraine & Georgia feeder service,” ICTSI said in a statement. The new service features fast connections between the Port of Batumi and the ports in Gioia Tauro, Italy; Burgas, Bulgaria; and Ilichevsk and Odessa in Ukraine. Hamburg Süd christened its new containership, Cap San Vincent, at a ceremony at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) shipyard in Okpo, South Korea, Wednesday. Aliança: Second Flagship in the Cabotage Fleet Christened

With the christening of the new container ship “Vicente Pinzón”, the Hamburg Süd subsidiary Alianҫa has -- for the moment -- completed the expansion and modernization of its fleet. In the past two years, Alianҫa has launched a total of six newbuildings for its cabotage services, four of which feature a slot capacity of 3,800 TEU each and two with 4,800 TEU each. All newbuildings have set new standards in the Brazilian coastal routes in terms of their capacity and environmental characteristic.

ZIM Expands Asia-ECSA Services

Israeli container carrier ZIM is expanding its Asia – South America East Coast (SAEC) via the Suez Canal at the end of May. The new service, Asia – East Coast Brazil (AEC), a collaboration with the SSA group, will allow ZIM to offer a second weekly service on this trade, in addition to our established Asia - South America service (ASE). The new service provides direct connection to Korea, as well as expanding ECSA port coverage by adding Rio de Janeiro & Navagantes in Brazil. The AEC will commence May 9 from Pusan with a full port rotation of Pusan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Navegantes, Paranagua, Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Pusan.

Alianҫa’s Fleet Continues to Grow

Hamburg Süd Christens Third San Class Ship

Hamburg Süd christened its third container vessel in the new San class yesterday, officially naming newbuild San Vicente at the Cuenca del Plata terminal in Montevideo. The new ship class in the Hamburg Süd fleet has a nominal container slot capacity of around 9,000 TEU and with 1,370 reefer slots for refrigerated containers a correspondingly high reefer capacity. San Vicente’s sponsor is Elisa Maier, wife of Roland Maier, owner of the Swiss Commodity Supplies AG, with which Hamburg Süd has been working for many years.

MOL Joins Project to Mark Anniversary of Japan, Brazil Treaty

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced that MOL cooperated in the transport of the “Tachinepta” float (*1) Samba Carnival (*2) Components of the float, weighing about 5 tons in all, were placed into 15 containers and loaded aboard an MOL-operated containership. The vessel departed the Port of Shimizu on November 25, 2014, and arrived at Santos, Brazil on January 7. The Tachinepta was then assembled by craftspeople who traveled to the site from Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. When the magnificent float was completed for the opening of the Carnival on February 13, it measured more than  featured in the  that began in Sao Paulo, Brazil on February 13. Hamburg Süd Christens “Cap San Antonio”

On Friday, Hamburg Süd celebrated the christening of its container ship “Cap San Antonio” at the Cruise Terminal of Le Havre, France, with customers and business partners. The sponsor is Veronika Schüller, wife of Prof Dr Stephan Schüller, Chairman of the General Partners of Bankhaus Lampe KG. The “Cap San Antonio” is one of a series of six new ships of the “Cap San” class built for Hamburg Süd at the Korean yard Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan. All newbuildings of this class each have a nominal slot capacity of 9,600 TEU, making them the shipping group’s largest vessels. With 2,100 container plugs, they have the largest reefer capacity worldwide, thereby underscoring one of Hamburg Süd’s core competences in the transport of refrigerated cargo.

CMA CGM Upgrades SAMWAF Service

The CMA CGM group announced an upgrade on its SAMWAF service with direct and regular calls on the South America East Coast - West Africa trade, as from the end of May, 2014. The upgrade will bring to the service larger vessels and add two new calls in Lomé (Togo) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and other African destinations available via our Lomé hub. Inland transportation is also provided by integrated intermodal solutions, being the SAMWAF service the gateway to connect the Brazilian and African markets.

Second Berth Opens at DP World London Gateway

New shipping services are being announced as the second berth at DP World London Gateway opens for business. Britain’s newest port doubled its capacity as the second berth began operations in May. Five new shipping routes to North America, South America East Coast and West Coast, the Middle East and Europe are starting. New rail, road and container services are also announced. The G6, one of the world’s largest shipping alliances, will start a new service at DP World London Gateway on Friday, May 16.

Yesterday, Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança christened its containership Pedro Álvares Cabral during a ceremony held for customers at the port of Itapoá. The ship’s Sponsor is Elisabeth von Krüger de Freitas, the wife of Humberto Ramos de Freitas, Executive Officer for Logistics and Mineral Exploration of Vale S.A., one of the most important clients of Aliança Bulk. Dr. Arnt Vespermann, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd and Julian Thomas, General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança, also participated in the ceremonies.

CMA CGM Reshuffles Services

CMA CGM announced a revised service between North Europe and South America East Coast as from mid-April which will consist of two loops as detailed below. This change will take place from Europe with SAFRAN1, m/v CAP SAN AGUSTIN eta Rotterdam April 16; and SAFRAN2, m/v MSC BARCELONA eta Antwerp April 15. CMACGM said the revision was made to help provide more efficient services to its customers.
