South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) announced a record container volume of nearly two million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled in 2016. SCPA handled 1.996 million TEUs in 2016, surpassing the previous record of 1.985 million TEUs handled in 2005. Container volume in TEU was up 1.2 percent compared to last year. Loaded TEU volume was up 4 percent year-over-year while empty container volume was down 10 percent. “This is a significant accomplishment for the SCPA of which we are very proud,” said Jim Newsome, SCPA president and CEO. “We are cautiously optimistic about the future given the significant automotive projects that exist in the Southeast along with the seeming recovery of emerging market economies, which drives U.S. exports.

South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) reported its strongest November container volumes on record. SCPA handled 175,217 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in November, a year-over-year increase of 14 percent. Previously, SCPA's strongest November on record was 163,121 TEUs handled in 2005. With 864,970 TEUs moved since the fiscal year began in July, the Port's container volume is up 4 percent. As measured in pier containers, or boxes handled, SCPA also broke previous November volume records by moving 99,041 boxes last month.

South Carolina Ports Authority announced plans to enhance international intermodal rail service between the Port of Charleston and the Charlotte Regional Intermodal Facility at the Charlotte Douglass International Airport. Effective March 12, the new two-day Norfolk Southern service will operate five days per week connecting Charleston and Charlotte using existing dedicated intermodal trains. Containers moving between Charleston and Charlotte will ride an existing Norfolk Southern overnight intermodal train between Charleston and Spartanburg, where they will connect to intermodal train service between Spartanburg and Charlotte. “This…

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) announced today that October volumes were up nearly 17 percent year over year, continuing a growth trend in container traffic well above the organization's financial plan. SCPA handled 164,672 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in October, up from 141,049 TEUs moved during the same month last year. Fiscal year to date, TEU volumes are up 14 percent and nearly 13 percent ahead of plan. As measured in pier containers, October volume increased 19 percent over the same month last year, with 94,470 boxes moved.

On the heels of announcing its fiscal year 2013 volume results, including a nine percent gain in container volume and a more than 14 percent increase in non-containerized cargo at its two ports, the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) reported operating earnings of $12.72 million, which was a net gain of $5.45 million from the previous year. Operating revenues at the agency closed at $140.49 million for the 12-month period, seven percent ahead of the previous fiscal year's $130.95 million. "Given our aggressive capital investments over the next several years, it is essential to maintain a solid financial position and a steady stream of funds toward these important projects," said Jim Newsome, the SCPA's president and CEO.

South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) Board of Directors approve its fiscal year 2014 financial plan. During its regular monthly meeting, the Board approved the SCPA's fiscal plan for the coming 12 months. From July 1 to June 30, capital spending of $123 million will fund major infrastructure investments such as the new container terminal at the former Navy Base, new equipment to handle the increased size of ships in the port as well as other upgrades to existing facilities. The largest single area of spending is for the South Carolina Inland Port in Greer, SC, with $29.1 million planned to cover the remaining SCPA share of the project. The new facility is slated for a September 2013 opening.

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) closed a year marked by new carrier services, inland port development & Charleston harbor deepening project. In results announced at the SCPA's regular meeting, container volume in Charleston was up 9.6 percent in calendar year 2012, with 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled at the port's two container terminals. Volume was up 13 percent in December compared to the same month last year, with 124,120 TEUs traded across the docks. Charleston also was the fastest-growing East Coast container port January through November, the latest month of volume data available from competing ports.
