U.S. Coast Guard response and incident management teams are coordinating with G & H Towing and T & T Marine Salvage to prevent a disabled tug and barge from running aground on Galveston Island, Texas. At 2:19 p.m. Saturday, an agent for the integrated tug OSG Independence and its barge OSG 243 contacted Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders to report that the tug separated from the barge in heavy seas off the Galveston Island Pleasure Pier, while dragging both anchors.

A Coast Guard aircrew plucked 2 men from the south Galveston Jetty Saturday morning, after their sailboat lost steering and ran into the rocks. At 9:06 a.m., the crew of the 27-foot sailboat called Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders for help. While they were on the phone, the sailboat’s anchor line parted and they were headed for the rocks with 15 to 20-knot winds. The watchstanders sent a Station Galveston boat crew to assist them, but they were up against the rocks before the station arrived. They were able to get on the jetty. The watchstanders launched an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to rescue the men, as the rescue boat was unable to safely recover them and they were concerned about them being able to make it back with waves crashing on the jetty.

A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew rescued three fisherman after their boat began sinking early Sunday morning near the jetty off Galveston. Crewmembers of the shrimp boat Jana Lynn called Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders via VHF-FM channel 16 at around 3 a.m., reporting their boat was taking on water. Watchstanders launched a Station Galveston 45-foot response boat crew, who quickly retrieved the men before the situation got worse. They reported that their dewatering pumps lost power and they maneuvered the boat on the jetty to keep it from sinking.

A Coast Guard boatcrew medevaced a 46-year-old man from an oil tanker in the Galveston Fairway Anchorage Wednesday evening. At approximately 3 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a phone call from the captain of the 580-foot Jupiter Ace stating that a crewmember was coughing blood for unknown reasons. Watchstanders launched a boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Galveston aboard a 45-foot response boat along with two local paramedics. The boatcrew and a paramedic moved the man from the taker onto the response boat. "Normally the boatcrew would not have paramedics ride to the scene with them," said Petty Officer 1st class Jeff Linberg, duty watchstander at Sector Houston-Galveston.

An oil tanker has been refloated after running aground last Tuesday 35 miles east of Galveston, Texas. The SN Federica, a 750-foot Italian flagged oil tanker carrying more than 400,000 barrels of crude oil (nearly 17 million gallons), ran aground while transiting into the Galveston Fairway. The grounding caused the ship to incur damage to the forepeak of the vessel, leading to an ingress of water which was later determined to be ballast water and the ship was not leaking. A 53-year-old passenger was medevaced from the cruise ship Emerald Princess nine miles off Galveston Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. At approximately 8:30 p.m., the Captain of the Emerald Princess contacted Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders stating that a passenger smashed his thumb in a door while in his cabin, partially severing it. Watchstanders launched a Station Galveston boactcrew aboard a 45-foot response boat. The boatcrew pulled alongside the Emerald Princess at about 9 p.m. and brought the injured man aboard. After returning to the small boat station, the man was turned over to EMS in stable condition. "It was a very smooth transfer," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Gerald Goss, a machinery technician aboard the response boat.

The cause of a collision between the cargo ship 'Genius Star VII' and a barge loaded with 840,000 gallons of #6 fuel oil in the Houston Ship Channel is being investigated by the US Coast Guard. Watchstanders with Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Texas City received a report at approximately 8:30 p.m., on Friday concerning a collision, which occurred between a loaded barge and a 394-foot cargo ship loaded with grain. There has been no report of injuries or pollution from either vessel. Both vessels are reporting damage, but are in stable condition.

The Coast Guard has responded to a collision between two barges in the vicinity of Siever’s Cove on Bolivar Peninsula, in the Intracoastal Waterway. The captain of the tug pushing the barge TTI-150 contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Texas City to report this barge's collision with barge CBC 7026. A 25-foot Response Boat from Station Galveston was sent with a team of incident responders, marine inspectors, and marine casualty investigators, to conduct a preliminary investigation and mitigate any possible further risk to the environment or the mariners aboard the vessels.

A man swept from a fishing boat and into the waters of Galveston Bay was saved by a quick-thinking friend and a piece of standard safety equipment Sunday. While fishing in Galveston Bay, four men aboard a fishing boat were interrupted by a large wave that sent one of the men into the water. Another man quickly donned a life jacket and grabbed a second one for his friend before jumping into the water to help him. "The operator of the boat tried to maneuver, but broke his key off in the ignition and stalled the engine when the wave upset the boat," said Petty Officer 1st Class David Sassner, the coxswain of the responding Coast Guard boat. A good Samaritan notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston of the incident at 4 p.m.

The crew of a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Houston rescued a woman who was injured when two boats collided 56 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, this morning. Kim Huong Dang was knocked unconscious aboard the Lucky Peter, an 88-foot shrimp boat, when it collided with the Peter Ronna, a 324-foot Russian freight ship, just after 7 a.m. The Lucky Peter called Coast Guard Group Galveston after the accident occurred and reported that all four people onboard had injuries and they were taking on water. Group Galveston coordinated Air Station Houston's crew to launch a rescue helicopter, Air Station Corpus Christi to launch a Falcon jet and Station Galveston to launch a rescue boat to the scene.

It was a busy night Friday, May 3, as several mariners required the assistance of the Coast Guard units around the New Orleans and Galveston, Texas, areas. A 23-ft. safeboat from Station Grand Isle, La., was dispatched to assist a 45-ft. pleasure craft taking on water in Timbalier Bay, about10 p.m. Friday. The crew of the safeboat passed a de-watering pump to the five-man crew of the First Class, who were able to safely transit to the pier at Coco Marina. The Coast Guard crew followed to ensure their safe transit and mooring. In a separate case, a 41-ft. utility boat from Station Galveston safely transported a man suffering from abdominal pains with a weak pulse and shallow respiration from a tanker about 2 a.m. Saturday.
