A passenger who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico was rescued Thursday after a day of treading water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call from the Carnival Valor at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday, reporting a passenger aboard the cruise ship was missing. Man Overboard from Bulker Near Southwest Pass

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man overboard from the Hong-Kong-registered bulk carrier Shandong Fu Xin approximately 97 miles southeast of Southwest Pass channel in Louisiana.The search is for a 5-foot 31-year-old Vietnamese male.Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a radio call at approximately 6:35 p.m. Thursday on VHF-FM channel 16 from the crew of the Shandong Fu Xin stating a crewmember reportedly failed to show up to watch that afternoon. The crew reported they were unable to find the missing crewmember after a search of the vessel.The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and coordinated the launch of several Coast Guard assets to aid in the vessel's search.

Boaters Strike Decommissioned Oil Rig

The U.S. Coast Guard said it has medevaced five boaters who were injured after striking a decommissioned oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, Sunday.Coast Guard watchstanders in New Orleans received a mayday call on VHF-FM Channel 16 at 12:03 a.m. from a boater stating multiple persons on board had suffered injuries after their vessel struck a decommissioned offshore rig 23 nautical miles southeast of Venice, La..A helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans hoisted two patients with more severe injuries…

Lift Boat Crew Rescued in US Gulf

Four crewmembers aboard the lift boat Superior Trust were rescued after the vessel became unstable near Southwest Pass, La., Wednesday. U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a call early Wednesday morning reporting one of the Superior Trust’s legs failed and made contact with a natural gas platform’s walkway resulting in approximately 10 gallons of oil discharge. Coast Guard Station Venice launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew that arrived on scene and transported the Superior Trust crew back to shore. There were no reported injuries. Coast Guard Cutter Brant crewmembers later arrived on scene to monitor the lift boat, and Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 aircrew conducted an over flight.

USCG Medevacs Injured Mariner Near SW Pass

A Coast Guard helicopter rescue crew medevaced a man south of Southwest Pass, at around 12 p.m., Tuesday. The crew of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans was dispatched approximately four miles south of Southwest Pass to pick up a mariner who had reportedly suffered a head injury. The helicopter crew lowered a rescue swimmer into the water, and the swimmer climbed into the boat to assist the injured man. The rescue swimmer prepared the man and the helicopter crew hoisted the man aboard, and then flew him directly to EMS at West Jefferson Medical Center. During the medevac, the offshore supply vessel Odessey Titan positioned themselves upwind of the sailboat to minimize wind and wave impact on the vessel.

Fishing Vessel Captain Medevaced Near Venice

The captain of a fishing vessel was medevaced near Venice, Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported. Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans Command Center received a call from a crewmember aboard the vessel stating the captain had reportedly sustained a head injury, around 6:43 a.m. A Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Venice small boat crew were directed to launch and arrived on scene at 8:40 a.m. The aircrew hoisted the captain and transported him to Air Station New Orleans to awaiting Emergency Medical Services.

Search for Missing Hunter Near South Pass

The Coast Guard, state and local agencies responded to a report of a missing duck hunter in the vicinity of South Pass on the lower Mississippi River, Thursday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report of the missing hunter and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, and a Coast Guard Station Venice rescue boat crew at 9:17 p.m., Wednesday. First responders searched throughout the evening and into the morning. Plaquemine's Parish Marine Division and Lousiana Wildlife and Fisheries joined the search this morning. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries located the hunter at 10 a.m. on the western side of South Pass.

USCG Suspends Search for Missing Tanker Crewman

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for an Indian tanker crewman, Ram Mohan Singh, reported missing from the 598-foot crude oil tanker Rainbow Quest near Southwest Pass, Wednesday. Coast Guard crews searched for 44 hours in a search area of 1,179 square miles approximately five miles south of Southwest Pass in an effort to locate Singh. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from the Rainbow Quest that Singh was missing after an 8 a.m. muster, Tuesday. The Hong Kong-flagged ship conducted sweeps of the vessel with negative results; no life jackets were reported missing. Singh was last seen Monday at 9 p.m. wearing an orange jump suit.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a an Indian crewman, Ram Mohan Singh, 25, reported missing from a tanker vessel anchored five miles south of Southwest Pass, Tuesday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from the 598-foot Rainbow Quest that Singh was missing after an 8 a.m. muster. The Hong Kong-flagged ship conducted sweeps of the vessel with negative results; no life jackets were reported missing. The vessel has been at the Southwest Pass Anchorage for the past 24 hours. Singh was last seen Monday at 9 p.m. wearing an orange jump suit.

Sunken Mississippi Tugboat Causes Cruise Ship to Divert

Passengers aboard the 'Carnival Conquest' cruise ship returning from a 7-day Caribbean vacation got an unexpected detour to Mobile, Sunday, a diversion required by the closure of a 10-mile stretch of the Mississippi River, reports 'The Times-Picayune'. The US Coast Guard reports that they received a report Saturday at 12:10 p.m. from a passenger vessel near the 48-foot tug boat C-Pec that capsized and sank in the river at mile marker eight above Head of Passes near Venice. A 33-ft response boat from U.S. Coast Guard Station Venice, La., monitors efforts to free the grounded tank vessel Eagle Tucson, Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, near Pilottown, La., at the mouth of the Mississippi. The Eagle Tuscon grounded at approximately 2:45 a.m., Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, and is currently blocking deep-draft shipping traffic.

USCG Rescues Workboat Crew

Coast Guard crews rescue nine people after a workboat struck and became lodged on a wellhead near Venice, La., seven miles north of Main Pass. Four HH-65C rescue helicopter crews from Air Station New Orleans medevaced six people from the workboat who were injured. Four men were flown to Air Station New Orleans where they were met by ambulances and two others were flown directly to West Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Two rescue boat crews from Station Venice transported two men to shore and the captain is still on scene with the workboat, along with a rescue boat crew from Station Venice. At approximately 5:10 a.m. The Coast Guard was alerted to the emergency by the captain of the the Lady Marie by way of marine radio.

Coast Guard Responds to Rig Explosion

U.S. Coast Guard crews from Venice, La., and New Orleans are en route to a reported rig explosion 73 miles southeast of New Orleans. Plaquemines Parish 911 contacted Coast Guard personnel at Group New Orleans at 10:10 a.m. to report the rig explosion. Two people are reported missing, one injured. A boatcrew from Station Venice and two helicopter crews from Air Station New Orleans are responding.

Cargo Ship, OSV Collide, 5 Missing

On Saturday U.S. Coast Guard crews were searching for five people missing after a vessel collison in the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River near Venice, La. The upriver-bound 534-ft. cargo ship Zim Mexico III and the downbound 178-ft. offshore supply vessel LEE III reportedly collided at 5:20 a.m. After the collision, the LEE III capsized. A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Venice, La., a helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans and a jet crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., are on scene searching for the five people reported to have been on the LEE III. Investigators from Marine Safety Office New Orleans are investigating the cause of the accident.

USCG Maintains Hurricane Response

The Coast Guard’s current emphasis is the safety and security of people in the areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina, and is working closely with federal, state and local partners on that goal. Coast Guard air and boat crews have assisted in the rescue of 1,259 people, and they are continuing to respond to distress calls. The Coast Guard is working with FEMA, and is delivering relief supplies aboard its C-130 cargo planes. There are approximately 4,000 Coast Guardsmen currently in the area working on response and recovery, as well as 15 cutters, 37 airplanes and rescue helicopters, 63 small boats, three maritime safety and security teams, three oil and hazardous material response teams and five aid to navigation teams.
