Salvage Tug Koyo Maru Built for Nippon Salvage

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group company christened and launched a salvage tug being built for Nippon Salvage Co., Ltd. The ceremony took place at the Enoura Plant of MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The vessel, named Koyo Maru, is scheduled for handover to Nippon Salvage in June 2024 following completion of outfitting work and sea trials.Koyo Maru measures 80.6 x 15.5 m with gross tonnage of approximately 3,000.

US Port Projects Awarded $44.3 Mln in Grants

After evaluating 627 applications, 50 of which were from ports, for the FY 2015 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants, U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced 39 awards for $500 million in funding to be made in the seventh round of this multimodal, discretionary grant program. Of those, five awards totaling $44.3 million, or about 9 percent of total funding, are going to commercial seaports or to projects that directly aid the efficient movement of goods to and from America’s ports.

North Sea Job Losses Raise Skills and Safety Concerns

Cost-cutting in Britain's North Sea oil and gas sector could lead to more acute skills shortages in future, industry experts have warned, with some expressing concerns that safety could be compromised. A plunge in crude prices over the last 12 months has prompted oil majors such as Royal Dutch Shell, BP , Chevron and ConocoPhillips to lay off hundreds of workers. Oil field services groups such as Amec Foster Wheeler , Wood Group and Petrofac are also in consultation with employees over job cuts.

DNV Updates Standard for Offshore Service Modules

DNV said it has completely rewritten the standard for Offshore Service Modules certification, commonly referred to as DNV 2.7-2, which was first published in 1995. The new document is now available and an event to explain the guidance will be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Center (AECC) on June 11, 2013. According to DNV, there are currently various industry sources of guidance and standards, some of which contain conflicting advice, making it difficult for users to gain assurance that their equipment is compliant and that as Duty Holders, they are effectively managing the hazards that may be introduced to the offshore installation. DNV believe that the new DNV 2.7-2 offers a solution to this issue.

DNV Relaunches Standard for Offshore Service Modules

DNV has completely rewritten the standard for Offshore Service Modules certification, commonly referred to as DNV 2.7-2, which was first published in 1995. On June 11, 2013, DNV will roll this out to an industry seminar taking place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Center (AECC). This event will look at the issues surrounding the management and use of temporary equipment on offshore installations and how the new Standard for Certification may provide some clear guidance.

Intertek Moody Secures Contracts for Inspection and Training

Intertek has secured more than £5 million of new contracts for oil and gas technical inspection, training and staffing in the last six months through its North Sea Moody businesses. Intertek acquired Moody International last year in a £450 million deal. The company is currently investing £15 million in new Aberdeen headquarters in Scotland for its energy services, and the Intertek Moody teams are among the first to move to the new premises. The new center on the Energy Park in Bridge of Don is currently being renovated, and 160 staff expected to be based there by June.

GPA Involved with T-AGOR-27 Contract

In October 2011, the Seattle-based Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering firm Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA) was awarded a contract to deliver the Regulatory Design and Detail/Production Design for the T-AGOR-27 Ocean Class Research Vessel. The basic design was developed by GPA during a NAVSEA sponsored design competition while under contract with Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) and partnered with leading marine industry equipment vendors. The Navy-owned vessel will be operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution of Massachusetts. A second vessel may be awarded at a later date.
