Tidetech Unveils 'Data Cube' for Voyage Optimization

Provider of metocean data to the maritime industry Tidetech Commercial Marine Pty Ltd says it is enhancing the scope of its services in response to a growing demand for marine weather data.Tidetech generates and curates a wide range of marine weather data for delivery to shipowners and third party software vendors. Its latest enhancement is the introduction of the ‘Data Cube’, which enables users to query the data in three dimensions: longitude, latitude and time. When a shipowner or operator wants to obtain a weather forecast for their next voyage…

Pole Star Launches Cloud-based Platform

Pole Star, a U.K.-headquartered technology company delivering maritime application solutions, has launched its new cloud application platform, designed to facilitate the company’s vision to enable a universal maritime ecosystem. According to its developer, the new Pole Star platform is a highly configurable, extensible and easy-to-use cloud application platform, built upon a powerful, robust and open API, and using enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure. ‘VoyagOR’ Project Seeks Shipping Participants

Shipping companies are being sought to assist the ‘VoyagOR’ project, which aims use route optimization systems to make shipping operations more cost-effective. The VoyagOR project team is keen to engage with businesses that stand to benefit from improved route Optimization. A better understanding of such companies will help the project develop VoyagOR to best meet user requirements. VoyagOR utilizes a cloud-based voyage optimization system to provide a support tool to achieve fuel and emissions savings on short sea routes as well as improved scheduling.

Vessel Optimization Data Combines Ocean/Tidal Currents

A vessel optimization application offering combined tidal and non-tidal (ocean) current data has been launched for integrated vessel speed and route optimization. Developed by oceanographic data specialist Tidetech, the new application offers resolution of six nautical miles (0.1 degree) at 60-minute intervals in a six-day forecast. Significant passage time savings have been demonstrated in simulations. Tidetech managing director Penny Haire said this was the first time ships could access global tides and ocean currents in the same application.

Tidetech to Supply NAPA Ship Tidal Prediction Data

Tidetech and NAPA have agreed the supply of tidal current prediction data for ship optimisation fuel saving, initially for South East Asia and UK–Europe. Tidetech applies the science of oceanography to create data models that benefit commercial shipping – cruise ships, ferries, container ships, tankers – and offshore operations. Following a successful three-month trial aboard a 8,530DWT cruise ship – using Tidetech’s Singapore and Malacca Straits models – the agreement includes developing an expanded data model to cover the vessel’s full operating area of Phuket…

Singapore & Malacca Straits Tide Models Released

Recently developed commercial tidal models developed by applied oceanography specialist Tidetech for online viewing. The online viewer – OceanView – is an entry-level version of the company’s tidal models, viewable on any internet browser and on internet capable mobile devices. OceanView offers a highly detailed and accurate tidal current atlas featuring tidal current predictions at 1km resolution for every 30 minutes. Other features include latitude and longitude, place names, scale showing speed of current in knots (no interpolation necessary), and shipping lanes for easy reference.

'Beyond Weather Routing' China Presentation

Tidetech to present ‘Beyond Weather Routing: the role of next generation oceanographic data', at Green Shiptech China Congress 2013. The presentation will highlight the role of integrated, high-resolution oceanographic data in improving vessel efficiency and reducing bunkerage through route and speed optimisation. It will also focus applications in performance monitoring, improved ocean current forecasts, and new regional data models for Singapore/Malacca Straits, the China Sea and other Asian shipping routes. Tidetech managing director Penny Haire said oceanographic data for shipping efficiency was a new and low-capital approach to reducing bunkerage and emissions that could be applied immediately to new and existing ships.

Fuel-Saving New Tidal Model of Malacca Straits

A new high-resolution tidal model for the Malacca and Singapore Straits will potentially save ships thousands of dollars in bunker fuel costs. Simulations have shown that transit time savings of between three and 12 per cent can be made depending on vessel type, speed and tidal phase. The high-resolution (up to 800m) Malacca and Singapore Straits commercial tidal model, developed by applied oceanography specialist Tidetech, is the first of its kind in this region and addresses one of the major needs of the 60…

New Oceanographic Data in Major Ship-Routing Trial

New data that enables ships and superyachts to improve their routing efficiency is being trialled with a major cruise line company. The data, provided by oceanographic data specialist Tidetech, will allow captains and deck officers to route their vessels more efficiently, saving time, fuel and money while reducing environmental impact. The scientific data can be integrated with onboard navigation systems and provides an accurate feed of global ocean currents, sea surface temperatures…
