Volvo Penta Offers Sea Trials of IMO Tier III Solution
Visitors to one of Europe’s premier marine exhibitions will be able to test Volvo Penta’s 13-liter IMO Tier III solution complemented by its latest state-of-the-art Inboard Performance System (IPS) propulsion package. A test boat fitted with a Volvo Penta D13-IPS900 (700 hp) package and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after treatment system will be available for sea trials by customers at Seawork commercial marine and workboat exhibition and conference, in Southampton, UK.
Sizing Up the Market, Scaling Solutions to Size
In October of 2014, news of Oceaneering’s purchase of GE Transportation’s newest marine engine offering was making waves. These engines – ones which meet EPA Tier 4i and IMO Tier III Emissions standards – without the need for a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) exhaust gas after-treatment, had workboat operators everywhere looking at new possibilities. Before that, Harvey Gulf International Marine also entered into a contract to construct a new Multipurpose Field Support Vessel (MPFSV) at Eastern Shipbuilding, this one also powered by GE’s Tier 4 compliant, EGR main engines. That’s important because Harvey Gulf, the recognized North American leader in rolling out LNG and dual fuel propulsion vessels, in this case, selected a pure diesel engine.

Navigating the ABCs of SCR
On the way to Tier IV compliance, it turns out that experience counts. In late February, the nation’s first Tier IV, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) tugboat was christened. That’s probably not earthshaking news all by itself – after all, SCR isn’t all that new – but the event likely ushers in a new era of powerful domestic workboats that also come with a greener environmental footprint. How all of that comes together is a bigger story, and one which will play out again and again in the coming year or two. At the heart of it all is Crowley subsidiary Jensen Maritime Consultants, who today lead the design field with no less than seven Tier IV, SCR versions in development. Digging deeper, it isn’t hard to see why. The new Tier IV hull comes with a silver lining.
Already Strong on the US West Coast, Scania Looks East
Go east, young man, go east: Scania’s market reach grows with a key workboat contract. The reasons why are easy enough to see. When Scania announced its recent deal with Potomac Riverboat Company, part of the Entertainment Cruises family, to deliver eight, EPA Tier 3, 500 HP DI 13-liter engines in 2017 to power its high-speed, low-wake water taxis in Washington, DC, it marked the beginning of what is so far a good year for the San Antonio-based engine manufacturer. The 88-foot vessels will carry 149 passengers and will be built by Louisiana-based Metal Shark, to specifications from BMT Designers and Planners. The deal not only represents a significant number of individual engines, but more importantly for Scania, it cements the firm’s toehold in the red hot domestic ferry sector.
Ferry Tales: Having a Ferry Good Time
Despite of some of the lowest fuel prices experienced in the last eight years, demand for ferry construction is at a seemingly all time high. The focus on building new ferries kicked off in early 2013 and the sustained interest is the continued result of an unleashing of pent up demand. Fleets have been aging and infrastructure needs to be built up in order to accommodate the future demand for commuter ferry travel once fuel prices return to and surpass their once familiar norms.
Caterpillar to Deliver Highest Horsepower Tier 4 Solution
Edison Chouest Offshore has selected Caterpillar Marine's Cat Tier 4 Final C280-16 generator sets for two new vessels, Caterpillar announced today. The generators are the marine industry's highest horsepower Tier 4 solution, as well as one of the largest diesel electric propulsion (DEP) configurations in company history. Four Cat C280-16 generator sets, each rated at 5060 bkW @ 900rpm will power each vessel, which are being constructed at Edison Chouest’s La Ship shipyard in Houma, Louisiana.
