How is COVID-19 Influencing Passenger Vessel Design?

Not long ago, at the start of 2020, the market for passenger vessel construction was booming, with record orders rolling in across the size spectrum, from small passenger vessels all the way up to the world’s largest mega cruise liners.But then passenger vessels of all types and sizes began to empty out as COVID-19 spread. A large number of ferries were taken out of service or left operating with drastically reduced ridership (or in some cases, none at all) while the cruise industry—a related but separate species—was brought to a virtual standstill.

Helsinki Shipyard Lays Keel for Swan Hellenic's New Cruise Ship

The keel laying ceremony for the first of Swan Hellenic’s two new ice-class expedition cruise ships took place in Helsinki today. This saw the first 347-ton block of the ship – newly arrived from Klaipeda, where it had been outfitted and painted – being set on the keel over coins to bring good luck in accordance with ancient maritime custom.Swan Hellenic announced during the ceremony that the ship would be christened SH Minerva in honor of the company’s first purpose-built vessel, named after the Roman goddess of creativity and wisdom.

SunStone Orders Third Expedition Cruise Vessel at CMHI Yard

Miami-based  SunStone Ships has declared option number two at CMHI shipyard after signing a long-term charter contract with Victory Cruise Line for the vessel, with a total of three newbuilds now under construction at the Chinese yard.A press release from the manager of passenger ships across the globe said that it  originally placed one firm contract and nine options on Ulstein deliveries of expedition cruise vessel designs and equipment packages back in 2017.All ten vessels are part of SunStone Ships’ series of vessels in the ‘INFINITY-class’. With the declaration of the next option, the CMHI (China Merchants Heavy Industry) yard in China will be constructing three expedition cruise vessels based on the Ulstein design.

Four New Expedition Cruise Vessels Ordered

SunStone Ships, Inc. and China Merchants Industry Holdings Co., Ltd. (CMIH) have signed a framework agreement for the construction of four expedition vessels with options for an additional six vessels. The new vessels will be part of the SunStone Fleet and chartered to new and existing clients. CMIH has entered into an agreement with Ulstein Design & Solutions, who will supply the vessel’s design and equipment package, as well as the supervision for the building of the vessels.

MV WERFTEN, Foreship Sign Design Agreements

MV WERFTEN signed a letter of intent with the engineering company Foreship in Stralsund today. The agreement includes parts of the basic design as well as design, purchasing and production assistance of the “Endeavor” class luxury expedition yachts. The 20,000 GT cruise vessels will be built at MV WERFTEN Stralsund, with production starting late 2017 and deliveries from spring 2019. “We are excited to build a series of the world's first purpose-built expedition yachts, with PC6 polar-class designation,” stated Jarmo Laakso, Managing Director of MV WERFTEN. “Our own staff at all sites and other subcontractors have already been fully involved in this project.

Waterfront Entrance for Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway, the largest ship ever constructed in Germany, floated out of Meyer Werft’s covered building dock II at the end of February. The luxury cruise ship will undertake sea trials before her delivery to the owner and passage to her home port of New York by May 7th, 2013. The build project represented Bolidt’s highest profile decking commitment for a maritime customer through 2012, with 16,500m2 of surfacing materials delivered. This year, deliveries of Bolideck 525 and Bolideck Future Teak have already started for sister ship Norwegian Getaway, which is due delivery in 2014.

Bolidt Flooring is Selected for Norwegian Breakaway

Bolidt has announced  that well-known creative forces at Tillberg Design and SMC Design have selected the company to supply flooring for Norwegian Cruise Line’s (Norwegian) newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway. Many of the ship’s main public areas will be enhanced by Bolidt’s subtle and functional surface shades, the designers say. Bolidt, known as the deck and flooring specialists, is supplying 16,500m2 of surfacing for Norwegian Breakaway, including Bolideck 525, a seamlessly applied, skid resistant and shock absorbing deck covering system, or Bolideck Future Teak.

Costa Cruises Announces Plans to Remodel the "Romantica"

Costa Cruises recently announced that it has placed a new order with San Giorgio del Porto shipyard in Genoa for major restyling operations on the ship Costa Romantica (53,000 gross tonnage and 1,697 total Guests), presently operating for the Costa fleet. Costa Cruises is investing a total of around 90 million euros (over $128 million) for this work. Viking to Install AMOS

has received an order from Viking Line to equip their latest new built Viking ADCC with AMOS M&P and AMOS Q&S. The vessel is planned to be in operation during the autumn of 2009. Viking ADCC is a fast ferry and is currently being built at Astilleros de Seville in . The vessel is being custom built for the route Kapellskar – Mariehamn and has a capacity of 1,500 passengers and 320 cars. In accordance with the Viking standard, ADCC is constructed to produce minimal negative effects on the environment; All main and auxiliary engines are equipped with catalytic cleansing and low sulphur fuel will be used. No toxic anti fouling paints are used. Viking ADCC is constructed to accommodate the disabled and people in wheel chairs. The interior has been designed by Tillberg Design.

Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas Arrives in N.Y. Harbor

A clear, sunny Saturday afternoon of November 10, set the stage for the arrival of the first passenger ship into New York Harbor following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The vessel, Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas, sailed into New York for a two-day tribute cruise for the families of the fallen firemen and police officers who were victim to the devastation at the World Trade Center. Royal Caribbean also plans to donate $50,000 to the Twin Towers Relief Fund. The 142,000-ton Adventure of the Seas - sister ship to Voyager and Explorer of the Seas - was christened at Pier 88 and named by representatives of the New York Police Department and New York Fire Department.
