US Could Get First LNG Import from Russia despite Sanctions

A vessel that may be carrying liquefied natural gas from Russia's new Yamal LNG export terminal could be heading to the United States despite sanctions against the company that operates the Russian facility, according to a report by S&P Global Platts and Thomson Reuters shipping data. The tanker Chris. De Margerie picked up a cargo from Novatek PAO's Yamal facility, Russia's second LNG export terminal, on Dec. 9 and dropped it off at National Grid Plc's Isle of Grain LNG facility near London on Dec. 28, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Voith Completes First Major Marine Overhaul at New UK Facility

Voith Turbo, a manufacturer of a wide range of products for the marine industry, said it has completed its first major refurbishment project in a brand new U.K. facility. The complete overhaul of a 26-metric-ton Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) has been carried out for Red Funnel, the Isle of Wight ferry company based in Southampton, at Voith’s Croydon workshop. The refurbishment follows Voith’s investment in specially designed jigs, fixtures, machinery and lifting equipment capable of handling Voith Schneider propellers, gearboxes and other ancillaries.

Heriot-Watt University Orders ASV C-Enduro

Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh Campus, has confirmed the order of an ASV C-Enduro. The C-Enduro Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) will be used for research in persistent and long term autonomy with multiple remote and autonomous marine platforms. The vehicle’s primary application will be as a moving navigation and communication platform for AUV’s. Professor David Lane of Heriot-Watt said: “The vehicle will be available to students in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems as a research facility.

Severn Glocon Acquires Calidus Engineering

Control valve engineering specialist, Severn Glocon Group has strengthened its presence in the subsea oil and gas market with the acquisition of HPHT downhole tools company Calidus Engineering. Now renamed Severn Subsea Technologies Ltd, the company will provide research, development and test facilities to enhance Severn Glocon’s subsea valves capability. A former subsidiary of Badger Explorer (Norway), Calidus is a multi-discipline engineering firm developing innovative subsea and downhole technologies for harsh HPHT environments.

HB Rentals Makes Key Appointments

Offshore accommodation and workspace specialists HB Rentals, part of Superior Energy Services has made two key appointments to its business operations as it continues to grow in the eastern hemisphere. Brad Hirst and Mike Christie have been appointed sales and marketing manager and technical manager respectively and will operate out of the company’s new purpose built U.K. facility. Mr. Hirst joins HB Rentals with five years experience in the offshore module business holding various commercial positions with the majority of that time spent working in the Middle East.

Bennett Joins TITAN as Commercial Director

Jason Bennett has joined TITAN Salvage as commercial director, reporting to company Vice President Rich Habib. He is domiciled in TITAN's United Kingdom (UK) facility at Newhaven, East Sussex. As a member of the company's senior management team, Bennett will help shape strategic, operational and commercial business initiatives particularly as they relate to securing salvage, wreck removal and emergency response work for TITAN around the world. In addition, he will provide business development support for Crowley Maritime Corporation's newly formed solutions group.

He will operate out of Titan's United Kingdom (UK) facility at Newhaven, East Sussex, and will report to Rich Habib, TITAN's vice president. Hoddinott, who will continue his role on the senior management team, will work closely with TITAN's commercial division. Additionally, TITAN's Neil Ives has been appointed operations manager, Europe. Ives' responsibilities include managing the sales and marketing efforts for the region, pursuing new business, drafting proposals and contracts, supporting the salvage warehouse and operations and overseeing the administrative requirements in the UK office.

News: More Ghost Fleet Ships Contracted for Scrap

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MarAd) recently awarded a contract for the disposal of obsolete ships in the James River Reserve Fleet. Post-Service Remediation Partners (PRP) of New York will be awarded a payment of $14.8 million to remove a total of 15 ships from the James River Reserve Fleet. This is the largest removal of obsolete ships in a single year from the National Defense Reserve Fleet since 1993. "As stewards of the environment, the responsible disposal of obsolete ships is a high priority for the Department of Transportation," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta. The PRP award was the result of a negotiated Program Research and Development Announcement (PRDA) proposal that offered the removal of fifteen ships.

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) is making available for public review and comment the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for transfer and disposal of approximately nine obsolete vessels from the James River Reserve Fleet (JRRF) to the Able UK facility located in Teesside, United Kingdom. Taylor Made Environmental Opens New U.K. Facility

According to Trevor Goldsmith, managing director of Taylor Made Environmental, Europe, Ltd, the new facility includes a 5,000 sq. ft. warehouse, which is being stocked with over $1.7 million in inventory,and 2,000 sq. ft. of office space. There are also three fully operational workshops for repair and refurbishment of equipment. The new facility is being staffed by 16 employees, including five field engineers and other sales, service and administrative personnel. Goldsmith stated that Taylor Made Environmental will be able to provide 24-hour deliveries from stock anywhere in Europe for most popular items.
