Harland & Wolff's Appledore site in the UK's southwest has won a £55 million (around $65 million) contract to regenerate a former Royal Navy mine-hunting vessel, HMS Quorn. "On behalf of the Lithuanian Government, the Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA) awarded the contract that will see HMS Quorn renovated and restored, bolstering NATO maritime capability in Europe," the UK Ministry of Defence said Thursday."Supporting ambitions to bolster British shipbuilding, laid out in the National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh, the regeneration will support 100 jobs at the south-west shipyard.

Harland & Wolff said Wednesday it had acquired the former HMS Atherstone mine hunter from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) for an undisclosed fee."The former HMS Atherstone is a mine hunting class vessel that is no longer in service. The company has acquired this vessel with a view to refurbishing it for non-military uses, discussions for which have already commenced with interested parties," Harland & Wolff said.Harland & Wolff is involved in a competition run by the MOD regeneration program for the former HMS Quorn (M55).

Braemar signed a seven-year contract with the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) to provide global shipbroking services across all commercial maritime sectors. Under the contract, Braemar will provide the MOD with access to its S&P, chartering and research departments across Braemar’s 14 global offices. The seven-year contract encompasses all aspects of S&P, as well as spot and period chartering for routine and emergency response requirements globally.

The UK Royal Navy is developing a "Multi Role Ocean Surveillance ship (MROSS)" aimed at protecting critical subsea infrastructure from threat.In a statement on Wednesday, the UK Ministry of Defence said the ship would come into service by 2024."[MROSS] will be a surface vessel, with a crew of around 15 people who will conduct research to help the Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence protect our undersea critical national infrastructure and keep our lives and livelihoods secure from threat," the ministry said."Undersea cables are vital to the global economy and communications between governments.

Ships Electronic Services Ltd (SES Ltd) has supplied Clear-Com FreeSpeak II digital wireless communication systems to the UK Ministry of Defence for three of its naval vessels, with more in the pipeline. BMT Isis (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced that it will provide safety and environmental support for JFD’s five-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence for the provision of the NATO Submarine Rescue System (NSRS). JFD, which was formed by the merger of James Fisher Defence and Divex in 2014, has been awarded the five-year contract which includes options through to 2023 and encompasses all aspects of operation and through-life-support. The service will be managed by JFD’s Submarine Escape and Rescue team in parallel with existing similar services for Australia and Singapore. Engineering and technical support will be provided by JFD’s Engineering Support Cell.

Babcock has begun work under the recently awarded contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to provide repair and maintenance to small boats used by the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and MoD Police,. Babcock is one of the companies appointed by the MoD Commercially Supported Shipping (CSS) team to provide support services to the small boat fleet, including over 800 inflatables, five dive boats, ten Mexeflotes (landing raft/pontoons), and Gibraltar region police and patrol boats, under a three year contract with the option to extend for an additional two years. In addition to repair and maintenance services, Babcock may also be required to undertake spares provisioning, post design services which could include modification work, and storage.
