Liebherr’s Cranes Used For Recovery of “Kursk”

Special Cranes from Liebherr were used in the recently completed recovery of the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk, which sank in the Barents Sea in August 2000 after an explosion on board. Among the companies entrusted by the Russian government with the lifting and recovery of the Kursk, was the Dutch company Mammoet/Van Seumeren, which specializes in the transportation of heavy loads by sea. For this task, Mammoet/ Van Seumeren equipped the pontoon vessel Giant 4 with extensive special lifting equipment. This work was carried out in the Netherlands, and included the installation of two Liebherr Type HS 883 HD crawler cranes, each with a maximum load capacity of 120 metric tons. These cranes are developed and manufactured by Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH in the Vorarlberg region of Austria.
