Date for Diary: N. American World Maritime Day Observance Conference

'Sustainable Maritime Development'  will be the thrust of the 2013 World Maritime Day Conference in New York in October. Clay Maitland, Founding Chairman of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), has announced the program for the 2013 North American World Maritime Day Observance being presented by NAMEPA and the United States Coast Guard. The conference is designed to bring forward updates on environmental stewardship, promoting a safety culture, new technologies and innovation, maritime education and training.

Transportation Secretary Honors SUNY Maritime President

On Wednesday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m., U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will present the Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement to Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter, USMS, President, SUNY Maritime College for her support of relief efforts following Hurricane Sandy. The medal presentation and will take place as part of the 80th annual observance of National Maritime Day, a day honoring the men and women of the U.S. maritime industry for their vital contributions to the nation. www.dot.gov

Upcoming NAMEPA National Maritime Day Seminar

'Safety at Sea' focus of NAMEPA's National Maritime Day seminar at the Washington DC National Press Club. The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will be offering a seminar “Environmental Intelligence in Maritime:  Safety at Sea", featuring shipboard safety, piracy, and an update on issues for seafarers. The seminar will take place on May 21st at the National Press Club in Washington DC commencing at 2:00pm. The seminar is intended to commemorate National Maritime Day, which is held on May 22nd to honor merchant mariners.

NAMEPA Announce Upcoming Conference, Awards

Clay Maitland, Chairman of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), announces two major events. NAMEPA’s Environmental Intelligence in Maritime Conference, will feature “Greening the Marine Transportation System”, “The Arctic”, “Safety at Sea” and “Corporate Risk Management”. This conference, with NAMEPA's fifth anniversary in mind, will be held on 14, November 2012, and is to be followed by NAMEPA’s 2012 Marine Environment Protection Awards honoring Maersk, NOAA, SUNY Maritime College, and the American Salvage Association (ASA).

NAMEPA’s May 21st Event features Shipboard Safety, Piracy and  Seafarer Issues. Just months after the Costa Concordia accident, and amid daily reports of piracy and needless accidents at sea, the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will be offering a seminar “Environmental Intelligence in Maritime:  Safety at Sea, featuring shipboard safety, piracy, and an update on issues for seafarers. The seminar will take place on May 21st at the National Press Club in Washington DC commencing at 3:00pm.

Carpenter First Woman President at SUNY Maritime

The State University of New York Board of Trustees on June 30 unanimously appointed Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter, USN, president of State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. Admiral Carpenter is currently serving as the Commander of the Navy’s Warfare Development Command. The SUNY Board of Trustees voted on her appointment at a special meeting held on Thursday, June 30, 2011. Rear Admiral Carpenter is the first woman to serve as president of  SUNY Maritime College.
