A burn victim was medevaced from a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker approximately 179 miles east of Charleston, S.C., on Sunday.The U.S. Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector Charleston were notified on Saturday around 7:46 p.m. that a crew member aboard the Southern Shark obtained chemical burns during a tank cleaning. A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew was launched to medecac the ailing 45-year-old mariner, who was airlifted and transferred to Augusta Burn Center Hospital by 3:03 p.m.

The Maine Maritime Academy training ship, State of Maine, is flying a new pennant alongside the Maine Maritime Academy flag following receipt of the coveted Administrator's Award of Merit from the U.S. Maritime Administration. The award was presented to the officers, crew, and cadets of the training ship on Sat., Sept. 28, 2002, by William H. Ship Repair, U.S. on behalf of U.S. Maritime Administrator Capt. William G. Schubert. The Maritime "M" Award was discontinued after the Second World War and recently reinstated by the U.S. Maritime Administration under the authorization of Capt. Schubert. the first time it has ever been awarded to a ship's company. The pennant is authorized to be flown for a period of one year.
