Navy Installs New Multibeam Echo Sounders

December 18, 2003

In 2000 the Italian Navy Hydrographic Service installed two EM 300 multibeam echo sounder systems on their two new survey vessels, the "Galathea" and the "Arethusa". These two vessels have a wide spread of equipment from Kongsberg Maritime including EA 500 single beam echo sounder, a towed sidescan sonar, dynamic positioning system, etc. In the beginning of this year the Italian Navy Hydrographic Service again awarded a very important contract to Kongsberg Maritime for the supply of five multibeam echo sounder systems, four EM 3000 systems and one EM 1002 system. The supply of all sensors, associated with the multibeam has also been contracted to Kongsberg Maritime. The four EM 3000 multibeam echo sounder systems will be installed in the Navy's survey launches, two of which are on the "Galathea" and the "Arethusa". The two other launches will be used for various inshore survey operations. The EM 1002 will be installed on one of the Italian Navy's submarine rescue vessels, the "Anteo".
