BRITMEPA: 12 Percent of Water Pollution Results From Shipping

July 8, 2002

BRITMEPA (The British Marine and Shoreline Environment Protection Association) has called on U.K. shipowners, the U.K. maritime industry and all shore-based industries to pledge their commitment to cleaner seas and safer waters by taking extra care in the disposal of waste products. According to BRITMEPA, which is part of the international MEPA Federation, twelve percent of the pollution in our waters comes from shipping, with the remaining 88 percent originating ashore. "Despite legislation, the seas around much of Britain remain polluted," says the inspirationally named Capt Starling Lark, director-general of BRITMEPA. "Legislation has its place and is necessary, but commitment to the environment made voluntarily has so much more to offer." Source: Maritime Advocate
