Intertek Qualifies as USCG Testing Lab

March 8, 2001

The U.S. Coast Guard has accepted the Antioch, Calif., facility of the ETL SEMKO, America's division of Intertek Testing Services (ITS) as an independent testing laboratory authorized to perform fire safety shipboard doors and windows. ITS ETL SEMKO will conduct testing on fire doors and windows for class "A" and "B" division vessels to ensure compliance with the International Organization (IMO) Resolution MSC.61 (67), the International code of Application Fire Test Procedures (FTP Code). The Coast Guard will then review the test results.

For the Coast Guard to grant certification, a manufacturer must be involved in a follow-up surveillance service managed by an independent testing lab, such as ITS ETL SEMKO, to ensure continuous compliance with the applicable standard, even after completing the testing process.

The Coast Guard will on issue certificates to manufacturers after reviewing ITS ETL SEMKO's test reports and notification that the lab has initiated a production control service at the manufacturer's facility.
