December 10, 2003

A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a 40-year-old crewman suffering from a compound fracture and severe loss of blood aboard a fishing vessel one hundred and ten miles south of New Orleans late Monday night. The Coast Guard was notified at 11:42 p.m. by crewmembers aboard fishing vessel Santa Marie requesting assistance with an injured crewmember, Nguyen Dung. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene where the crew lowered a rescue swimmer and litter to the fishing vessel. It was then determined Dung had suffered a serious compound fracture at the knee, nearly severing it resulting in a great deal of blood loss. Dung was hoisted to the helicopter and transported in stable condition to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette.
