SNAME Call for Authors, Reviewers, Sponsors

October 19, 2010

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) is calling for Authors, Reviewers, and Sponsors for Phase 2 of the Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) program.  This effort is pulling together industry experts and stakeholders to identify the relative merits of the many environmental practices available for marine vessels.

MVeP is being developed to provide vessel owners, operators, designers, ports, and other governing bodies with a standard methodology to assess the relative impacts of environmental practices.  Thirty-four discrete marine vessel environmental impacts have been identified.  MVeP will provide a Performance Assessment Guide, based on objective technical information, for each of these impacts.  These Guides will be provided to quantify the environmental impact over a vessel’s life cycle.

Phase 1 of this project was sponsored by SNAME, American Bureau of Shipping, and The Glosten Associates.  This completed effort developed the methodology, and demonstrated the potential industry value of such an assessment.  The Phase 1 Report presents a checklist of 34 marine vessel environmental impacts each requiring a set of managing technologies, practices and assessment methodologies.  The full report can be found on the SNAME website (http://www.sname.org/SNAME/AHP19).

Phase 2 is currently underway and involves additional industry and academic technical experts to author and peer review the Performance Assessment Guides.  Sponsors for this significant effort are also being sought.  Authors, reviewers, and sponsors will be recognized in published reports as leaders in marine vessel environmental best practices.

The final product of the Phase 2 effort will be a SNAME Technical & Research Bulletin comprised of the Performance Assessment Guides, grouped into four categories:  Energy Efficiency, Air Emissions, Water Emissions and General Measures.

If you are interested in participating in this effort please contact the project team at MVeP@Glosten.com.  MVeP will be presented and discussed at the SNAME Annual Meeting in Seattle/Bellevue on November 3 – 5.
