Siemens Granted Order For RoPaxes

December 2, 1999

TT-Line Shipping Company has placed an order with SSW Fähr- und Spezialschiffbau GmbH of Bremerhaven for a pair of new RoPax vessels for a ferry service between Travemünde and Trelleborg. The Siemens Marine Engineering Subdivision will be supplying and outfitting all the electrical machinery and systems as a $40.4 million turn-key contract - which includes all the automation equipment employing SIMOS IMAC 55 equipment - as well as the communications systems. Two Siemens-Schottel SSP 10 Propulsors at 11 MW will propel each vessel. The new SSP pod-type propulsion system is developed for a very advanced type of vessel. An electric motor housed in a "pod" suspended beneath the hull of a vessel, the system provides direct drive to a propeller or propellers.
