Clatsop Community College (Astoria, Ore.) recently purchased a series of Virtual Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (VGMDSS) simulators from Buffalo Computer Graphics.

The system replaces an older BCG GMDSS simulator and is comprised of six student stations and one instructor station (GMDSSGUI). The simulator supports voice communication using VHF and MH/HF radios, along with text communication using radio telex and Inmarsat satellite terminals. Additionally, the VGMDSS package support NAVTEX, SART and EPIRB capabilities. Voice communication between student and instructor is supported through Audio Amplifier hardware and Voice over IP software both developed by BGC.

All simulated features of the system are controlled by the GMDSS Graphical User Interface (GMDSSGUI) including the ability to role play as any land or water based entity in the simulation process. Besides offering the multiple communication paths, the simulator allows for the recording and playback of a training exercise

With the purchase of optional USB Dongles, the system is also capable of being used on different computers; the same software can be installed on desktop computers in a classroom and laptop computers. When the schedule calls for exportable training, the dongles are removed from the classroom computers and installed in the laptops. The laptops can then be taken on the road and set up at any location.
