The new interactive gallery was developed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) at a cost of $5 million.

The Singapore Maritime Gallery was officially opened by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport. Housed on the second storey of Marina South Pier, and occupying a total floor space of approximately 1,000 square metres, the Gallery showcases the diversity and vibrancy of Singapore's maritime industry.

Singapore has long been associated with the sea and maritime trade, with its strategic position at the crossroads of East-West seaborne trade routes. The Gallery tells the story of the growth of Maritime Singapore, from a small entrepot trading post almost two centuries ago, to a premier global hub port and a leading international maritime centre today.

"Given the importance of Maritime Singapore to our nation, the Singapore Maritime Gallery strives to not only narrate the Maritime Singapore story, but more importantly, to engage, inspire and create greater public awareness of Singapore's diverse and dynamic maritime industry and its many achievements," says Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive of MPA.

Some of the highlights include a ship bridge simulator where visitors will be able to experience being a seafarer for a day and learn how to steer and berth a ship under various sea conditions, and a Vessel Traffic Information System console where visitors will learn how to handle challenging vessel traffic management operations. Another key exhibit is the giant ship model with touch screens and videos where visitors can learn about the main types of port and maritime services available in Singapore.

The Singapore Maritime Gallery open its doors to the public on 13 September 2012. The opening hours are from 9.00am to 5.30pm from Tuesdays to Sundays. The Gallery is closed on Mondays, unless it is a public holiday. Admission to the Gallery is free.
