GTT introduces SloShield real-time monitoring of liquid motion in tanks to improve LNGC efficiency

Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) and its partner Cryovision announced the launch of a monitoring system to help reduce the effects of liquid motion in Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs), including extra boil-off of LNG cargo, due to “sloshing” inside the vessel’s tanks.

The new tool, SloShield, uses an algorithm that allows LNG carrier crews to constantly monitor the vibrations in each tank’s structure due to specific sloshing activity by consulting screens in real-time, thus allowing them to make decisions based objective indicators to help optimize the ship’s operation.

This first generation SloShield is the result of more than three years of prototyping onboard an LNGC in real operational conditions, which qualifies it as a sea-proven, safe and reliable system. It was developed from a joint effort between GTT engineers, drawing on significant amounts of actual historical data on liquid motion in navigational situations, and the Cryovision team which has packaged the offer and will install the tool.

SloShield will be distributed by Cryovision on a turnkey basis that includes: studies, class validation, procurement, erection and commissioning. In addition, GTT experts are available to review the sloshing data, together with the operational environmental parameters to capitalize on each vessel’s specific experience.

Julien Glory, Cryovision COO, said, “A SloShield installation can even be done while LNGCs are at sea to accommodate customer constraints and schedules.”
