Valdez Oil Tanker Tax Ruled Unconstitutional

June 17, 2009

According to a June 15 report on ktuu.com, the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down a tax the city of Valdez has been collecting from oil tankers. A Conoco Phillips subsidiary, Polar Tankers, fought the tax and the high court ruled the tax unconstitutional. It argued that under a provision known as the "tonnage clause," Valdez must first get permission from Congress for the tax – something it did not do.
