Peel Ports Enters 10-year Deal with Volkswagen

Port of LA Container Volumes up in June
The Port of Los Angeles has released its June 2014 containerized cargo volumes, revealing overall volumes increased 13.89 percent in June 2014 compared to June 2013. Total cargo for June was 736,438 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), the largest volume in monthly containers since September 2012. Container imports rose 16.55 percent, from 328,324 TEUs in June 2013 to 382,666 TEUs in June 2014. Exports rose 8.51 percent, from 148,203 TEUs in June 2013 to 160,823 TEUs in June 2014.

Huge Hull for HMS Prince of Wales Ready for Delivery
BAE Systems informed that a huge section of the U.K. Royal Navy’s second Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, was loaded onto a barge in Glasgow over the weekend ahead of its departure to Rosyth later this month. The 8,000-metric-ton mid hull section called Lower Block 03 (LB03) is larger than an entire Type 45 destroyer and contains 160 cabins, machinery space, a portion of the aircraft hangar and even a bakery.

Vard to Design, Build PSV for E.R. Offshore
Vard Holdings Limited announced that it has secured a contract for the design and construction of one Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) for E.R. Offshore. The vessel is a multifunctional PSV of VARD 1 08 design with a total length of 81 meters, beam of 18 meters and a cargo deck area of 830 m2. The vessel will be prepared for standby, rescue, firefighting and oil recovery operations. Delivery is scheduled from Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam in 2Q 2016. E.R.

MT Bison Delivered to Buksér og Berging
Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Marine announced the recent delivery of the Robert Allan Ltd. designed FiFi1 escort tug Bison to Norwegian owner Buksér og Berging AS. In essence, Bison is a RAstar 2800/80 escort/terminal ASD tug measuring 28.2m x 12.6m and the ninth of this class to be built by Sanmar. Standard on this model is a sponsoned hull form, which enhances escorting stability. However, a number of improvements have also been made to enhance performance.

USCG Cutter Drydocked in Curtis Bay
The Wilmington, N.C.-based Cutter Diligence recently entered the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Yard in Curtis Bay, Md. for drydock availability. The 50-year-old medium endurance cutter will spend the next three months drydocked for approximately $2 million worth of “critical maintenance work,” the USCG said. Shortly after arriving in Curtis Bay, Diligence, a 210-foot medium endurance cutter permanently homeported in Wilmington, N.C.
