Cargo Numbers Edge Up in Long Beach
Cargo container numbers edged up 2.7 percent last month at the Port of Long Beach, making for the Southern California seaport’s busiest May since 2007 by reaching nearly 600,000 container units. Terminals handled 599,509 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) overall in May, including 312,439 TEUs of imports, which is a 2.3 percent increase compared to May 2013. Exports were flat with a slight decline of 0.3 percent to 146,702 TEUs. Empty containers rose 7.1 percent to 140,368 TEUs.

JFMS to Market EOI's TranSPAR Concept
James Fisher Marine Services Ltd. and ExtremeOcean Innovation Inc. Barge Master has obtained ISO 9001 certification for the development and exploitation of its offshore motion compensation systems, the company announced today in a press statement. Barge Master said its quality assurance, safety, health and environment (QASHE) system is in compliance with legal, industry and Barge Master standards. For the quality part, the company received the ISO 9001 certificate.

USS Ross Arrives in Rota
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) arrived at Naval Station Rota, Spain to begin her forward deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, June 16. Ross, departed Norfolk, Va., June 3, and is the second of four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers to be forward deployed to Rota, joining USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) which has been on station since February.

Port of LA Container Volumes Up 8% in May
The Port of Los Angeles has released its May 2014 containerized cargo volumes. In May 2014, overall volumes increased 8.2 percent compared to May 2013. Total cargo for May was 689,141 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). Container imports rose 7.75 percent, from 326,114 TEUs in May 2013 to 351,403 TEUs in May 2014. Exports rose 2.3 percent, from 154,904 TEUs in May 2013 to 158,473 TEUs in May 2014.

Navy Evacuation Exercise Performed in the Netherlands
On Wednesday, May 21 at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) Yard in Vlissingen Oost, the Netherlands, an evacuation test deployment of a Liferaft Systems Australia (LSA) 20m MES and 100-person capacity self-righting liferaft was conducted from the new Royal Netherlands Navy Joint Support Ship, HLNMS Karel Doorman.
