Officials said that a migrant was rescued on Sunday and that?50 other migrants are believed to have drowned after a boat sank in the Mediterranean.

Alarm Phone, which runs an emergency hotline for migrants, reported that the man had been swimming in the sea for a full 24 hours and believed all the other people on board the ship had died.

It was added that the?boat came from Tunisia. Tunisia is a common starting point for migrants who risk the dangerous journey to reach Europe.

Malta's military said that the man was rescued off Tunisia by a merchant ship and taken to Malta for medical treatment. The armed forces of Malta and Alarm 'Phone have not stated when the man was rescued. (Reporting from Chris Scicluna, Valletta; and Valentina Za, Milan; editing by Andrew Heavens).
