Abu Dhabi wins the first SailGP Championship for Britain
The SailGP 2025 Championship was won by Britain on Sunday. They beat New Zealand and Australia to win the championship and $2 million.
Dylan Fletcher of Emirates GBR said that the victory was "unbelievable" and that he felt "overjoyed right now", as the British crew celebrated its first SailGP Championship win.
The British crew founded by Ben Ainslie was the most consistent among the 12 teams in the league and had been at the top overall of the standings going into the last event of the year.
New Zealand's Black Foils led by Peter Burling also aimed to win their championship while Australian Tom Slingsby’s Flying Roos hoped to regain the title that they lost in 2024 to Spain's Los Galalos.
Slingsby stated that he was "incredibly" proud of his crew and added that this had been a "season of highs, and lows".
Australia took the lead in the grand final on Sunday, followed closely by Britain and New Zealand. Fletcher’s crew was able to gain a clear lead by reading tricky wind shifts. (Reporting and editing by Tomasz Janovski, Ed Osmond and Alexander Smith)
