Algeria announces tender for wheat purchase, traders claim

Posted to Maritime Reporter on March 24, 2026

?European Traders reported on Tuesday that Algeria's state grain agency OAIC had issued an international?"tender" to?buy flour milling.

The tender stipulated shipment in two periods: June 1-15, and June 16-30. The traders stated that if the wheat is from South America, Australia, or India, it will be shipped one month earlier.

OAIC stated a nominal amount of?50,000 metric tonnes, but it 'usually buys more. The traders said that the deadline for submission of offers is Thursday.

Algeria is the largest wheat importer in the world. Algeria is a major buyer of wheat from Europe, especially France. However, Russia and other exporters in the Black Sea?region have seen a strong expansion on the Algerian market.

The diplomatic tensions between Paris & Algiers have 'almost brought French wheat sales to Algeria to an end since mid-2024.
