Australia and Spain are tied for the lead after the first day of Bermuda SailGP
The Bermuda SailGP is the fifth round of the 2026 season.
The U.S. SailGP Team finished third with 28 points. Australia and Spain tied on 32 after racing on the Great Sound in 'SailGPs fourth visit to Bermuda. Germany by Deutsche Bank is tied with Canada's NorthStar on 25.
Taylor Canfield’s U.S. Team won the first race with a commanding display from start to finish. They were ahead of NorthStar, Germany and Germany.
Australia, fresh from its?victory at Rio de Janeiro made a bad start to the day. Tom Slingsby and his crew were penalised for fouling Spain, and dropped down the Fleet.
The three-time SailGP champions then won?race 2 ahead of ROCKWOOL and Spain before Diego Botin’s Los Gallos fought back with a?victory in?race three.
Slingsby won the fourth race to win two out of four races and equal Spain on the leaderboard.
Slingsby stated, "We had a great day at the end." It was a difficult first race but we managed to get back into it. We are happy to have had a successful day. We feel like we are in the race at the top.
Ryan Reynolds was a prominent supporter of the Australian 'team' in Bermuda. He attended the event after becoming a co-owner with fellow actor Hugh Jackman of the BONDS in June last.
Slingsby referred to Reynolds as a "new member of our family".
France had a tough day. The stand-in wing trimmer Glenn Ashby suffered an injury while crossing the trampoline during race two. They retired after the race and missed race three. France did make a comeback, however, with Australian reserve Tom Needham taking over for the final race.
On Sunday, the event will conclude with another fleet race before the top 3 crews compete in the final. Angelica Medina reports from Mexico City.
