Australia wins Bermuda SailGP and extends championship lead
Bonds Flying Roos from Australia won the Bermuda SailGP on Sunday. They beat Spain's Los Gallos, and Germany by Deutsche Bank to clinch their third win of the 2026 'SailGP' season.
Tom Slingsby led the?Australian Team to victory in the Great Sound final after they reached the decider race with plenty of time left.
The lead had grown to 14 seconds on the penultimate run and they held firm in patchy, light conditions. This was their second event win in a row after their victory in Rio de Janeiro.
After five rounds, Australia is now leading the championship with 45 points. The defending champions Britain come in second with 35 points and Spain is third with 34 points after their runner-up result in Bermuda.
Spain had a great start on Sunday, winning Race Five right from the start.
Diego Botin won his 20th SailGP race in his career. Australia came in second place despite being penalised by the race committee for sailing outside of its bounds. France finished?third, with David Gilmour as stand-in wing trimming onboard.
Australia won Race 'Six' ahead of Switzerland and France to seal their place in the?final? before the last fleet race.
Erik Heil's Germany was the winner of Race Seven, despite briefly losing their foils in a turn. This result secured their place in the final three boats alongside Australia and Spain.
The Sunday racing was marked by an unstable?breeze, and narrow margins at the course boundaries. Several?teams were penalized for pushing wide to reduce maneuvers.
