China clears Australian canola cargo, easing months-long approval delays

Posted to Maritime Reporter on January 29, 2026

Two trade sources told? Two trade sources confirmed that a cargo of Australian canola, which arrived in southern China this?month, has passed inspection. Processing at a crushing?plant is expected to begin this week.

China's COFCO, a state-owned company, has purchased at least nine loads, or approximately 500,000 metric tonnes, of Australian canola since August. Beijing had resumed the purchase of imported products that were banned from its market?since 2020 due to biosecurity concerns.

Two of the total shipments are?arrived but none has been processed. Canola shipments, which are the top suppliers in the world, usually clear customs within a week.

LSEG's ship tracking data revealed that the first bulk carrier, Armonia A, had arrived in a southern province called Guangdong by late November. The?second, Union Mariner?, reached a neighbouring region named Guangxi?in early January.

Sources said that the shipment to be processed in this week's batch is the second to arrive in Guangxi this month. The sources did not explain why the processing of an earlier shipment that arrived in Guangdong was delayed.

They requested anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak on the matter publicly.

China's Customs Authorities did not immediately respond to an inquiry for comment.

Beijing and Ottawa struck a deal this month to lower tariffs for Canadian canola. This prompted Chinese importers, who bought about ten cargoes or more than one tenth of China's canola imports in 2024 and 26% of 2025.

China has imposed preliminary duties of 75.8% on Canadian Canola as it conducts an anti-dumping investigation. This effectively stopped shipments in the midst of a larger diplomatic and trade dispute. Reporting by Ella Cao, Naveen Thupkral and Clarence Fernandez; Editing by Tom Hogue & Clarence Fernandez
