Chinese navy claims it conducted routine patrol in South China Sea
China's Navy conducted a routine patrol in the South China Sea, a spokesperson from its Southern Theatre Command announced on Thursday. The Philippines was accused of "undermining peace and stability in the region" by conducting joint patrols.
The announcement came after the Philippines completed on Wednesday joint naval exercises with Australia and Canada in the South China Sea.
The drills included anti-submarine war exercises, logistic operations, and staff exchanges. They highlighted interoperability amongst the four nations.
In a press release, Romeo Brawner, the chief general of the Philippine Armed Forces said that this maritime activity "reaffirms [our] collective resolve to defend our seas and maintain rules-based order internationally."
A Philippine Navy spokesperson said that two Chinese navy ships were observed following an international group but they were not performing synchronized movements which would indicate a raid.
Rear Admiral Roy Trinidad said that such messages were part of the malign influence operation to justify their illegal presence within the exclusive economic zone.
