Finnish divers help recover Italians who have died in the Maldives
The DAN Europe Divers' Network announced that three Finnish cave divers will join a team in the Maldives on Monday in order to search for and recover the bodies of four Italian scuba divers killed in an underwater cave accident.
DAN Europe, in a statement, said that the team arrived Sunday after the incident on Thursday in Vaavu, where the Italian divers were exploring caves in the Vaavu atoll.
In a Friday statement, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), said that the body of an Italian diver was recovered.
The body was found at a depth of 60 meters inside a cave. The statement stated that it is presumed the other divers would also be in this 200-foot long cave.
The Finnish divers -- Sami Paakkarinen and Patrik Gronqvist -- are working with MNDF officials.
Sergent-major Mohamed Mahudhee died from decompression sickness on Saturday, prompting the MNDF temporarily to suspend its recovery efforts, which were taking place under rough weather conditions and in the sea.
